Esperanza Aguirre, president of the Comunidad de Madrid, has stated that the Copa Del Rey final which is to be played this Friday should be suspended and then played elsewhere under closed doors in order to avoid national and separatist protests from Basque and Catalan supporters alike.
She points towards what happened three years ago in Valencia during the final between the same two teams to justify her opinion. At the time, both sets of supporters jeered the Prince and booed the national anthem.
"Insulting the national flag and anthem is an offence according to the Penal Code. It shouldn’t be allowed, therefore if it happens the match should in my opinion be suspended and played elsewhere under closed doors."
First of all, I’m really sorry for the bad partial translation.
Secondly, I just had to make a post about this because it shocked me beyond belief. Whatever happened to the democratic right to political protest? Whatever happened to freedom of speech and opinion? Just who does this person think she is?! Oh, and talk about self-fulfilled prophecies – of course everyone’s going to boo like crazy now!
Also, is she trying to stir things up and actually create a problem?! As if the radical factions needed yet another argument...!
I’m neither Basque nor Catalan, neither an Athletic nor a Barça supporter (though I do have a soft spot for the former) but boy, am I mad right now.
Lastly, sorry for so many posts in the last few days, but I just miss league football so damn much I do practically nothing else with my free time besides following any and every possible football-related news... =/
