Missing You.
Juan Mata missed a pen for Chelsea today in the FA Cup, bringing the grand total of Chelsea’s penalty missers this season in all competitions up to four. The Hall of Shame would stand:

Frank Lampard
Nicolas Anelka
David Luiz
& now
Juan Mata as well
So I was wondering who’s missed pens for your team this season (in all competitions, penalty shoot-outs included), and whether or not those misses proved costly?
Here’s Chelsea’s –
Chelsea 0 – Fulham 0
Frank missed in the penalty shoot-out, but Dave, JT (!!!! I'm as shocked as you are), Sala and Malouda all scored so we ended up winning the penalty shoot-out, so his miss didn’t prove costly, despite him taking the first – and what is usually the tone-setting – pen.
Everton 1 – Chelsea 2
Anelka missed a pen, then Chelsea conceded a pen (and had Ross Turnbull sent off) but Cech came on to save Baines’ penalty. Chelsea ended up winning 2-1 in extra time so again, the penalty miss didn’t prove costly, although it did drag the game longer than it needed be.
Genk 1 – Chelsea 1
Anelka was on the pitch for this match but he didn’t take the penalty because of his previous miss, so David Luiz – never afraid to put himself in the limelight – stepped up. Of all the penalties that Chelsea didn’t score this season, this was probably the best. The technique was right, the goalkeeper just so happened to have guessed the right way. However, had Luiz scored at that point, the game would have been 2-0 and Genk would have surely been out of sight. This draw and the ensuing loss against Leverkusen meant that Chelsea had to win their final CL group game against Valencia, which they did, thanks to Drogba being boss. So whilst the miss cost the game, it didn’t prove costly in the long-run as Chelsea ended up top of their CL group.
Newcastle 0 – Chelsea 3
At 0-0, Chelsea were given a penalty which our regulation penalty-taker Frank Lampard stepped up to take, and, for the second time this season, he missed. He was hauled off on the hour, leading to that famous sulk from the sidelines, but nonetheless Chelsea gave one of their most convincing performances of the season and became the first team to beat Newcastle on their ground this season.
Chelsea 1 – Birmingham 1
Almost immediately after Brum scored, Chelsea were awarded a penalty when Ramires was tripped in the penalty area. Mata, who had taken Chelsea’s penalty in the previous round of the FA Cup against QPR and scored, took the penalty, but it was very well saved from Doyle. I do feel bad for Mata, he was supposed to take the penalties against Man City (when Fronk wrestled the ball away from him) as well as Aston Villa (when Didi did the same thing), and AVB has technically designated him ~official~ penalty taker, but the Chelsea egos aren’t really having any of that. It’s hard to tell if this cost the game because there’s no guarantee what would have happened had Mata scored and it was 1-1. In the end Sturridge’s goal earnt Chelsea a replay so only after the repeat game at St. Andrews, shall we really see how costly this miss was.
Also, my question to you – would you still pick you standard pen-taker to take your penalties, despite their misses??
Cos I’d still back Lampsy to be Chelsea’s penalty taker. He’s had a few dodgy one these seasons but the one he scored against Joe Hart was just flawless and shows that he doesn’t lose his head in a tense situation. Lampsybung 4 me.
