Icelanders are taking over the Premier League NBD

Jonsson to join Wolves

Hearts utility player Eggert Jonsson has agreed to join Wolves on a three-and-a-half-year contract from January 1, the midlands club have confirmed.

Jonsson, 23, has signed for an undisclosed fee after passing a medical ahead of Tuesday night's Premier League clash with Norwich at Molineux.

He started his career in Iceland with second division side KF Fjardabyggdar before joining Hearts in the summer of 2006.

Jonsson, who can play at full-back, centre-back and in midfield, was voted player of the year by Hearts supporters for the 2009-2010 campaign and made more than 150 appearances for the club.

Jonsson, who joins former Hearts defender Christophe Berra at Molineux, has won 12 full caps for Iceland and also represented his country at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy said: "We've been watching Eggert for a long time and he has impressed our scouts up there.

"He's a versatile midfield player who can play in a number of positions comfortably and will be a good addition to the squad.

"He's a good player now but he's also one of those at an age where he has got more improvement in him and should get better and better. Playing alongside better players in a better league will only help him in that respect."

The deal will be ratified on January 1 when the transfer window reopens.

Jonsson said: "I'm looking forward to getting started, getting into training and then fighting to get into the team. Hopefully I can bring something to the squad and help the club.

"It's all happened quickly and as soon as I knew of Wolves' interest I was really excited and saw it as a great opportunity. I've been up in Scotland for a long time and feel ready to take the next step."

Hearts are keen to see Jonsson enjoy similar success to former Jambo Christophe Berra after sanctioning the move.

A club spokesperson said: "Eggert has been good for Hearts and we would like to think the club has been good for him. This is a chance for him to take a major step up in his career and we wish him all the best for the future.

"He came through our academy and has been a great role model for the younger players at the club. His professionalism during his time here has been exemplary and we are delighted at the progress he made.

"Christophe Berra has done well since moving to Wolves from Hearts and we hope Eggert has the same impact in England."

Swans swoop for Icelandic midfielder on loan

Swansea have signed midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson on loan from Hoffenheim until the end of the season, the Bundesliga club have confirmed.

The Iceland international previously played for Reading and left the club last year after Hoffenheim came in with an offer in excess of the Royals' transfer record of £6.5million.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has since played 36 league games for Hoffenheim, scoring nine times.

The German side's manager Ernst Tanner told his club's official website: "Gylfi missed the summer and most of our preparations due to injury and did not really kick on after that.

"We now hope that through this loan he will get some much needed match practice and get back to his former strength."

They both starred in the U21 team that nearly made the semis at last summer's Euros.
Gylfi is imo one of the most exciting talents in Europe, he didn't get the opportunity he deserved at Hoffenheim so this is a good move.

Gylfi and Eggert join Heiðar Helguson at QPR and Grétar Rafn Steinsson at Bolton to make it four Icelanders in the Premier League!!
