Sapong scored five goals and dished out five assists for Kansas City in 2011, leading all rookies in points, and appeared in all 34 regular-season matches for manager Peter Vermes, the only Sporting player to do so. He also scored in the club’s Eastern Conference Semifinal against the Colorado Rapids.

Sapong is the first Kansas City player to win the award following a season in which he made 22 starts and trailed only midfielder Graham Zusi in assists. He also scored three goals in two US Open Cup qualifiers.

Le Toux is the third MLS player to collect the honor in back-to-back years, following in the footsteps of Michael Parkhurst (2007-2008) and Steve Ralston (1999-2000) as the only other players to win the award multiple times as well as in back-to-back seasons. This year, the Philadelphia attacker beat out Colorado Rapids defender Kosuke Kimura and New England Revolution defender Darrius Barnes, the two other finalists.

In 3,060 minutes of action for the Union this season, the French striker committed just 20 fouls and didn’t receive a yellow card. He scored 11 goals and nine assists to lead the Union in each category as they made their first appearance in the MLS playoffs in just their second year of existence.

The team award went to one of the two new clubs in the league. The Timbers committed the fewest fouls in the league this season (347) during their inaugural campaign in MLS. They were also second-to-last in red cards (three) and, along with a handful of other teams, averaged fewer than 1.5 yellow cards per match.
