Mats Hummels knows why his BVB is right at the top of the table.
“I think it mostly has to do with the enthusiasm for football. We have a very enthusiastic team, everyone can’t wait for the next match to come. It already starts with the training sessions. When we’re doing shots on goal or tournaments, we don’t just want to do it and be over with it. We want to show what we can do and have fun.”
His strong headers lead to goals. That also makes the central defender the best defensive player of the league right now, according to many experts.
“What is the most fun part for me is scoring goals. This is what you want when you start as a 7 or 8 year-old. At that time no one thinks about defending, you just want to bang in the goals. It’s still one of my favorite moments, although today my role is further in the back.”
This Mats Hummels guy is 22 years old, enjoys the black-yellow football frenzy almost as much as a fan.
“This moment when you just start cheering with the crowd as if you’re with them as a fan… you can’t escape this feeling, even as a footballer.”
The football fever at the Ruhrgebiet keeps rising. Only 7 matches to go with 7 points ahead until it’s the 7th title for Borussia.
“I did notice it of course. The amount of people… just on the Südtribüne and then the masses of people in the whole gigantic stadium, the sheer volume of it. And when we score a goal or are attacking, I get the feeling that this isn’t happening a lot at other places.”
By the way, in the three years he was wearing the yellow shirt, no other club received less goals and lost less matches than his BVB.
“We always want to improve ourselves. After many good performances (except that one Leverkusen match) we started to realize how ‘easy’ it is to be successful.”
No question, Mats Hummels know the road to success.
