Greek side Aris Thessaloniki thought they had found a nice squad picture on upcoming Europa League opponents Manchester City to publish on their website. But City's managing director Garry Cook was not as impressed when he saw the print in the match program.
- The Greeks had accidentally printed a cartoon picture on the City squad, among others, Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Leo Messi and the cartoon character Waldo.
It all started with a satirical cartoon sent in to Brirish The Guardian when Manchester City spent billions in the summer transfer market. The drawing, with the style modelled after that on The Beatles' album cover for Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, represents City with a 60-man squad containing amongst others names like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Mesut Özil, Leo Messi and the cartoon character Waldo.
It seemed unfortunate that Aris Thessaloniki chose just that picture when they searched the internet for a suitable squad picture for City. The Greeks did not understand that the image was a parody, but pressed a full version game program with the photo.
The mistake was discovered the during dinner that club leaders traditionally attend to been before big games. Even though Cook said he thought it was just a funny mistake, the Greeks embarrassedly made brand new match program copies. Some programs nevertheless found their way out and are now sold for good money online. One of them, for example, is available on Ebay for about 360 SEK.
