England Update

The final line-up for Wednesday's friendly against Denmark was released on Saturday!
(Plus a fun fact filled article about the squad...)

Goalkeepers: Ben Foster (Birmingham), Joe Hart (Man City), David Stockdale (Fulham)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Bolton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Tottenham), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Man City), John Terry (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Aston Villa)

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Man City), Stewart Downing (Aston Villa), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Man City), Scott Parker (West Ham), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

Forwards: Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Darren Bent (Aston Villa), Peter Crouch (Tottenham), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd)

'England manager Fabio Capello has sprung a major surprise by including Aston Villa defender Kyle Walker in his squad to face Denmark on Wednesday. Capello has been struggling in the right-back department, with doubts over both Phil Jagielka and Micah Richards.

Walker's call-up comes following a period in which the 20-year-old has shone in loan spells at QPR and Villa. Fulham keeper David Stockdale has also been selected in the international squad for the first time. However, his role is likely to be as back-up to the more senior pair of Joe Hart and Ben Foster. Sheffield-born Walker, who scored a fine goal in Villa's 2-2 draw with Fulham on Saturday , is not part of manager Harry Redknapp's short-term plans at parent club Tottenham. He has appeared for England at Under-19 and Under-21 level, making his debut for the former before he had appeared in a Football League match for his first senior club, Sheffield United. Walker subsequently joined Tottenham in July 2009, although he struggled to make an impact at White Hart Lane and it was not until he signed a loan deal with QPR in September that he started to catch the eye.

Capello's lack of options at right-back is highlighted by the fact Glen Johnson is likely to start in that role in Copenhagen, even though he has spent the last few weeks at left-back for Liverpool after an inconsistent campaign. Striking trio Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe all return to the squad after sitting out England's 2-1 defeat by France in November through injury, while Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard returns after missing the last four England matches. There is also a call-up for West Ham midfielder Scott Parker, who made Capello's provisional World Cup squad but was released without playing a minute of the warm-up matches against Mexico and Japan.
There is no place for Cardiff's Jay Bothroyd, who made his debut against France, while Jack Wilshere is the only one of the youngsters Capello used in November to keep his spot.

In the absence of the injured Rio Ferdinand, who suffered a calf injury during the warm-up before Manchester United's defeat at Wolves on Saturday - a problem which will rule him out for a fortnight - Steven Gerrard will take the captain's armband. Michael Dawson, Gary Cahill or Joleon Lescott will partner John Terry in central defence, with Ferdinand missing a 10th game out of the 13 England have played since he inherited the skipper's job from John Terry. Capello will also be watching Sunday's Premier League action anxiously with seven of his 25-man squad due to be in action, including five in the eagerly anticipated clash between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

England's game on Wednesday will be played at the Parken Stadium, which has a retractable roof and will provide similar conditions to those England will face in their next Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales at the Millennium Stadium in March.'

Kick off is at 7:15pm GMT.

Thoughts? Anyone you think we're missing and who are you hoping to see play against Denmark? I'm still mourning Andy Johnson's injury but am excited about newboys Stockdale and Walker.
