Midfielder Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid, was honored Sunday in Tolosa, his hometown. The star of the Spanish team world champion and Royal was greeted by thousands of fans, who recognized the importance of the player to the sport in the country.
Xabi was born in Tolosa and Tolasa wants to recognize the professional journey of this footballer, who was born in the inland city in Guipúzcoa province in 1981 and spent the first six years of his life in Barcelona, where his father, the legendary Sociedad player Periko Alonso, played first for Barça and then for Sabadell. At the age of six he moved to San Sebastián and began his football career, first at la Concha and afterwards at Antiguoko.
After working his way up the ranks of Real Sociedad’s youth teams, he debuted with the first team at 18, but Javier Clemente decided to loan him to Eibar. John Toshack recalled him halfway through the following season and his presence proved decisive in saving Real Sociedad form relegation.
In the 2002-03 season, Xabi Alonso became the brains behind the unforgettable Real Sociedad side that finished second in the league after fighting for the title until the very last fixture against Ronaldo's Real Madrid.
Two seasons later he signed for Liverpool, the club which proclaimed him Champion of Europe, in addition to which he won a number of other titles in the UK.
With the Spanish National Team he has become European and World Champion, during the celebrations of which he brandished a Real Sociedad flag - the club to which he belongs regardless of the club for which he plays*. In fact, Xabi Alonso is Real Sociedad’s socio number 6,688. He has been a member since 1993, when he was 11 years old.
In 2011 Alonso will also receive San Sebastián’s Golden Drum - the highest prize awarded by the city – for his contribution to promoting the Guipuzcoan capital’s image.
