Portugal NT lineup under new coach, Paulo Bento

Força Selecção

(News roundup. Yes, I still believe we can qualify for Euro 2012)

Paulo Bento has made some surprise call-ups in his first squad as new Portugal coach. Joao Pereira, Rui Patricio, Carlos Martins, Paulo Machado and Helder Postiga are five new faces in the group. (I wouldn't say Postiga is a new face in the group though)

Portugal squad: Bento calls up five new faces

Paulo Bento has made some surprise call-ups in his first squad as new Portugal coach. Joao Pereira, Rui Patricio, Carlos Martins, Paulo Machado and Helder Postiga are five new faces in the group. Toulouse midfielder Paulo Machado and Sporting right-back Joao Pereira make the squad for the first time, while Postiga, Martins and Patricio are recalled after long absences.

Bento also confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will remain captain of the team, giving a resounding endorsement of the often criticised Real Madrid star. “The captain of the Seleccao is Ronaldo. I believe he has all the conditions to carry out this function.

“We can’t think he will solve all the team’s problem and we don’t expect him to. But we can’t have one of the best players in the world and not treat him well. He has shown that he is fully committed to the Seleccao.

“I give just one example. The Hungary game [when Ronaldo played despite being injured, setting up a goal before having to be substituted] was an example of the sacrifices Ronaldo is prepared to make for the Seleccao. He is an example, a good example, who can infect the other players with this commitment.”

Portugal play Denmark at Porto’s Estadio do Dragao on 8 September, before travelling to Reykjavik to play Iceland four days later.

Full Squad

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen), Nani (Manchester United), Danny (Zenit), Helder Postiga (Sporting), Liedson (Sporting), Varela (FC Porto).

Quaresma is not on the list because he's injured. I'm against making Ronaldo the captain, it should be Carvalho or Alves, they suit the role more but a decision has been made already, oh well. And don't you think Carrico should have been called up? Nani and Cristiano, if they play well, our team will be really deadly. BOSINGWA when will you play again? We need you at RB.

Deco: “Queiroz is false and wanted me out”

“Speaking about Queiroz is not easy because it’s complicated kicking a dead person,” said former Portugal midfielder Deco by way of introduction, before fiercely criticising the recently sacked national coach. “I don’t like talking about Queiroz because I have a very bad opinion about him,” Deco told today’s Portuguese daily Record.

“There are aspects to Queiroz that I don’t understand and it’s not a question of our personal relationship. I never had any problem with him. The only thing is that he took some attitudes as regards me which were incorrect. He is a false person. Comparing Queiroz with Scolari is impossible. I’m not talking about their technical ability as coaches, but to compare one human being to another is impossible.”

Deco earned the last of his 75 caps for the national team in Portugal’s opening World Cup game against Ivory Coast. He was substituted early in the second half and criticised Queiroz’s tactics after the 0-0 draw. He did not feature again for the Seleccao.

“Queiroz wanted to get me out. I found out that he asked the Federation to get rid of me but the Federation refused. He created a situation where he wanted me to pack my bags and go. After the first World Cup game against Ivory Coast he accused me of betraying my team-mates and practically threw me out of the team. The episodes that happened during the World Cup were complicated for most of the players. It was supposed to be an experience for everyone to make the most of, but it ended up being a disastrous experience because of everything that happened with the coach.”

Turning to the future, Deco believes Portugal have made a good choice in contracting Paulo Bento, and has few doubts that the Seleccao will soon be playing good football and getting better results. “Bento is an excellent choice. Several players have retired, but Portugal is well served with up-and-coming players. I believe the Seleccao with qualify for Euro 2012, and I can guarantee that I will always root for Portugal.”
