Arsenal boss Wenger refuses to condemn Almunia

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger refused to criticise Manuel Almunia after their defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

Almunia gave away a first-half penalty and then saved it before gifting Albion their second goal by letting Gonzalo Jara's shot slip through his fingers.

"Well, you can have question marks over many players today if you look at the performance, especially defensively," said Wenger. "Many players made massive mistakes defensively.

"I do not want to talk about any one performance, we were collectively poor. You could single out many players. Overall it was a poor team performance and we have to analyse why and respond well.

"It's unexplainable how flat the whole thing looked for the whole game, it's a mystery for me.

"Today in our performance something was not right. It was unusual to see a team as flat was we were."

Arsenal boss Wenger admits West Brom deserved win
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had no excuses for their shock defeat by West Bromwich Albion.

Three second-half goals from Peter Odemwingie, Gonzalo Jara and former Arsenal player Jerome Thomas put Albion in dreamland before Samir Nasri scored two late consolation goals for the home side.

"We were poor and we got a poor result," said Wenger. "We were poor everywhere, at the back, up front and in the middle of the park.

"We had an off day and were not good enough to win the game. I believe the concentration that gives you the sharpness was not there today.

"We made it more difficult because we were not at our usual level, defensively or offensively. Anything was difficult for us today, to pass the ball, to win it back.

"Overall we got what we deserved, that is zero points. We didn't deserve more."

Wenger desperate for Arsenal to win away in Europe

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is looking for a first away European victory in more than a year when Arsenal travel to Partizan Belgrade - both for his team's Champions League and domestic ambitions.

The Gunners opened their Group H campaign with a 6-0 demolition of Braga at Emirates Stadium a fortnight ago.

With what is set to be a first genuine test of their Barclays Premier League title credentials away to leaders Chelsea next Sunday afternoon, both the result and the performance in Belgrade take on an extra significance.

"It is important to get a good result against Partizan Belgrade because first of all, it gives us a good opportunity to qualify if we can then win our home game afterwards," said Wenger, whose team lost their quarter-final against Barcelona in April and last won a Champions League away fixture at Standard Liege during September 2009.

"As well, it is important before going to Chelsea that we have a good performance."
