Bayer Leverkusen fear the spate of injuries suffered by Michael Ballack has taken its toll mentally on the midfielder.
Ballack was forced to sit out the World Cup after being injured in the FA Cup final against Portsmouth.
After securing a move from Chelsea to Leverkusen in the summer, the veteran fractured his tibia which has ruled him out of action for the next six weeks.
In addition, doubts have been cast about his future as a German international after coach Joachin Leow left him out of the squad earlier this month and an on-going row with stand-in skipper Philipp Lahm over the future of the captaincy has not eased matters.
Leverkusen fear Ballack might be suffering from depression due to these setbacks. The player has decided not to attend any of his team's games while he is out and will recuperate at home.
In comments quoted by Express, club boss Wolfgang Holzhaeuser said:"He needs to rest and recuperate his injury. He is free to decide whether he wants to enter the stadium. For healing, it is best that he puts his feet up at home.
"Michael was very depressed after the second injury."
This article reminded me of Robert Enke, and I started to tear up. Gosh, I hope Micha recovers real soon.
And ugh, I'm missing the bayer vs. frankfurt match.
