MONTEVIDEO - The young player of Nacional Diego Rodríguez (22), who suffered a brutal car accident on last Thursday in the Rambla of Montevideo, passed away on Saturday morning due to his severe wounds, as has been informed by close sources in the club.
The player had been in a bad state since the accident and the doctors weren't very optimistic about his recovery because of his terrible injuries and the loss of encephalic mass.
The official announcement was made after his father, former Uruguayan NT's defender Juan Jacinto Rodríguez, now working as coach in Arabia, flew back to the Southamerican country to see his son.
Rodríguez, who played both as defender and as midfielder, gave his first steps in Nacional and played the last season out on loan for Central Español, where he scored 7 goals. He'd rejoined Nacional only a few weeks ago and had been a starter in the match that his team played against El Tanque Sisley for the 3rd game of the Apertura.
Today, he was given the last goodbye by family, friends, fans, teammates and members of the club. The president of Nacional, Ricardo Alarcón, deeply regretted this loss: "We've lost a son."
All matches for this week of Apertura were suspended.
