The colour selection is actually a little confusing - next to the colour bar there are two sets of up/down arrows. The left set is the brightness and the right set is saturation. For example, if you want white, you click the up arrow on both until you get white on the top end of the colour bar, and if you want white you keep clicking down on both of them.
Also, the default position of the eyes is weirdly low, make sure you move the eyes UP to make room for face! If needed.
