Higuain urges Cole to join Real

Cole has spent more time on the front pages than the back pages in recent months in the wake of his high-publicised split from his pop star wife Cheryl Cole.

The Chelsea full-back has been linked with a move to Real Madrid where he would be reunited with former Blues manager Jose Mourinho and Higuain has told Cole that he would enjoy a quieter life if he were to sign for the Spanish side.

"At Madrid, Cole's football will make all the headlines, not his private life. I think that will be a big incentive for him," Higuain is quoted as saying in The Sun.

"I have spoken with a couple of senior players who the club confide in and they are very confident that we will sign him in the next few weeks."

Cole turned his back on Arsenal to join Chelsea in 2006 and Mourinho has made it clear that he wants the England international to follow him to the Bernabeu.

Higuain believes Cole will be persuaded to move by Mourinho's determination to protect his players from media intrusion.

"Once players have played for Jose Mourinho, they seem to want to follow him. Jose is very much like Argentina coach Diego Maradona in the sense that he will lay down his life for his players," Higuain went on.

"It's everybody inside the club versus the rest of the world and that protection which the coach offers is a real incentive.

"Ashley will know all about Jose's passion and love for his players and I am sure he is keen to link up with him again."

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has denied Cole is on the way out of Stamford Bridge, but Higuain is convinced a deal will be announced in the near future.

"The vibe around the training ground is that the deal will be done. All the players are very excited about his arrival," he explained. "It does not surprise me that Chelsea say he is not for sale.

"But when Madrid want a player we usually get our man."

Carvalho: I want Real Switch

Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho says he is desperate to reunite with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid this summer as he wants to play for the "best club in the world".

Carvalho has enjoyed success under Mourinho at both Porto, where he won the 2004 Champions League, and Chelsea, where the Portuguese defender won the 2005 and 2006 Premier League titles.

Carvalho also picked up a third winners' medal last season but fell behind Alex in Carlo Ancelotti's pecking order and was restricted to 22 Premier League starts.

It appears the 32-year-old is now seeking a new challenge and the lure of playing for Mourinho at the Bernabeu is too much for Carvalho to resist.

"If there was a possibility to sign with Real Madrid, I would go there right now swimming or running," Carvalho told AS. "Chelsea have a commitment with me to let me go this summer, for reasons which those responsible at the club and I know.

"It would be a dream to be able to play for Madrid, which I consider to be the best club in the world, and follow the orders of the best coach in the history of football. With Mourinho I experienced two marvellous stages at Porto and Chelsea. To have the opportunity to win another Champions League with him at Real Madrid would be tremendous.

"I find myself in the best moment of my career, because physically I am at the top and moreover I have a great experience.

"I spent six spectacular years at Chelsea and I had the opportunity to experience a glorious period of this club, but I repeat that to sign for Madrid would be a dream.

"I'm very grateful to Roman Abramovich for signing me and making me part of the Chelsea project for six years. He was a very important person for English football and Chelsea, who became one of the best teams in the world."

Per Mertesacker tipped as back-up Arsenal transfer target

According to the Daily Star, the manager is considering making a £10 million bid for the 25-year-old Werder Bremen player should he be unable to persuade Everton to sell the ex-Sheffield United man.

The Merseyside club have already rejected a £14 million offer for Jagielka and while a renewed £18 million attempt could be on the cards, Wenger seems to be weighing up his other options.

Strengthening the Arsenal back-line has been a major priority for the Frenchman during the summer transfer window.
He has already signed Laurent Koscielny for £10 million from Lorient but is keen to bring in another player to bolster a defence hit by injury problems last season.

Mertesacker, who was part of the German squad during the World Cup, is thought to be interested in a move to the Emirates Stadium and sources have claimed details about his future will be confirmed next week.

He is currently contracted to play for Werder Bremen for the next two years.

Toure chose City over United for football reasons

Manchester City new boy Yaya Toure says he turned down overtures from Manchester United because he wants to do "great things'' at Eastlands alongside his brother Kolo.

Meanwhile, a weakened City line-up slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Sporting Lisbon on Friday thanks to Yannick Djalo's first half double at New York's Red Bull Arena.

Toure didn't play in that match but he is hoping to settle in with his new team-mates as soon as possible to set about achieving his lofty aims for his first Premier League season. Toure is one of a handful of high-profile players to join big-spending City since the end of last season, with his transfer from Barcelona costing around £24 million and earning him wages in the region of £200,000 a week.

Asked about his decision to move from Camp Nou, Toure said City was not the only offer he received and that footballing reasons - rather than financial ones - were key.

"Last year Manchester United were interested in signing me,'' said Toure, who has joined his brother - a £16 million acquisition last summer, - on City's pre-season tour of the United States. "When I was talking about renewing my contract, United asked if I wanted to sign for them.

"In football, you don't know what is going to happen tomorrow. United are a big club, one of the biggest in the world, but I chose City because they have not won anything for a long time. It's a very nice feeling to come in and see everything changing. It's an interesting challenge for me and I hope everything goes well. I saw a lot of things written about why I left but, for me, I wanted to play with my brother.

"That was very important for me. Now I've signed for City I'm very happy. Now my brother and I want to make great things happen at this club and I'm sure we'll do it. My motivation is to do great things with City, to finish second or third maybe, to get into the Champions League.''
