Marcos Rojo joins Manchester United

United sign Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon

- Argentina international joins on five-year contract
- Nani to join Sporting Lisbon on loan

Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of €20m, with Nani joining the Portuguese club on a season-long loan. Marcos joins on a five-year contract.

Rojo, 24, joined Sporting from Spartak Moscow, having started his career at his home town team of Estudiantes de la Plata. Marcos has played 28 times for Argentina since making his debut three years ago and played six games, including the final, in his country's run to the recent FIFA World Cup final, scoring in the last group game against Nigeria. He was named as one of the defenders in the Castrol Index All Star Team of the tournament.

Marcos Rojo said: "It is such an honour to say that I now play for Manchester United. The Premier League is the most exciting league in the world and to have the chance to play in it for the world's biggest club is a dream for me. I am young and am very keen to continue to learn the game, so playing for such an experienced technical coach as Louis van Gaal is a fantastic opportunity for me. I have joined United to work hard with my team-mates to win trophies and I know that the manager shares that ambition."

Louis van Gaal said: "Marcos is a very gifted defender. He has played at the highest level in world football and can play either as a central defender or left-back. He has ability, physical strength and a willingness to learn that means he has a very bright future ahead of him. He had a very strong World Cup and has been playing in Europe for a couple of years now. He is a very good addition to the team."

Happy to see him signed to a big club, I hope he does well.

Because, Why Not?

Balotelli says he is leaving AC Milan to join Liverpool

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli looks to be heading for a shock move after telling Sky Italia that he is joining Liverpool.

The Italian club's TV channel also reported that negotiations over Balotelli with Liverpool have begun, with any deal for the 24-year-old former Manchester City striker to be for a permanent transfer.

Liverpool approached Milan about the former Manchester City striker just weeks after Brendan Rodgers denied making a move.

And Balotelli later said: "Today is my last day (at Milan). I am going to Liverpool."

Rodgers has made no secret of his wish to bring in a new forward following Luis Suarez's summer departure, but any chance of Balotelli coming appeared dead in the water earlier this summer.

Speaking on Liverpool's tour of the United States, Rodgers said: "I can categorically tell you Mario Balotelli will not be at Liverpool.

Rodgers was instead targeting Monaco's Radamel Falcao, but the Colombia striker's preference is a move to Real Madrid.

Balotelli's three seasons at City were blighted by trouble, on and off the field, although he did manage 30 goals for the club in all competitions.

I generally ignore transfer rumors, so this hit me out of nowhere. This should be an interesting season.

Bastian wants the Euro; knee troubles since January; wants to be captain but can't say so.

As I know a few people here were/are worried about Bastian Schweinsteiger possibly joining in on the retirement wave, have two articles from yesterday and this morning translated:

Nice mix between determination and modesty in the captaincy issue. Also, sorry for any bumpiness in the translation. English grammar can't quite catch some of these wordings, and my English is bad when I translate rather than writing immediately.

Didn't translate that article, but Beckenbauer is still after Reus. Doesn't care that Dortmund is annoyed a the whole thing. Calls him a "bargain buy". Charming man.
