Cuban Player Defects During Gold Cup

A Cuban player, Yosniel Mesa, defected during the Gold Cup, leaving the team hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In an interview aired Sunday on Univision, Mesa says he decided before the tournament to defect.  He says the decision was difficult, but the 30-year-old wants to play professionally and that's not possible in Cuba.

After Cuba lost to Mexico 5-0 in Charlotte on Thursday, Mesa says he climbed down a fire escape ladder at the hotel and ran to a car where family members were waiting.

He was listed as ''injured'' on Cuba's roster for Sunday's 6-1 loss to El Salvador in Chicago. The team left the stadium immediately after the game, with coach Raul Gonzalez skipping the postgame news conference.

Two Cuban players defected during the 2007 Gold Cup.

What kind of pro career does he expect to have at 30?  Then again, what do I know.  Dreams can come true~  Good luck to you, Yosniel Mesa.

Talks for LFC to get Charlie Adam to begin later this week

Sky Sports News sources understand Liverpool will hold talks with Blackpool's Charlie Adam later this week.

The Scotland international has long been a target of the Anfield club and they failed in an attempt to agree a deal in the January transfer window.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish's interest in his compatriot is not thought to have ended and he is again attempting to secure the playmaker, with Sky Bet suspending their market earlier on Monday.

Sky sources understand discussions will consequently take place with relegated Blackpool and Adam later this week.

The Reds have already signed Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and are expected to continue to remodel their squad this summer.

Ongoing interested in Adam, who suits Fenway Sports Group's policy for young, British players, adds to the uncertainty surrounding Raul Meireles.

Despite a promising debut season in the Premier League, it has been speculated that the 28-year-old could be sold due to his age and doubts about his fitness. (Exsqueeze me? This man is free of flaws)

I'd MUCH rather keep Meireles than get Adam, tbqh. I will beat a bitch J-Woww if we get rid of Meireles before other midfield players (Poulsen, J.Cole, I'm looking at you.)

Someone get me lots of black coffee, whiskey and cigarettes - it's going to be a LONG summer transfer season.

Thoughts? I guess I agree with what he's saying: promote the sport in the U.S., promote the involvement of immigrant communities and women, make our teams better--but I'm not sure that U.S. Soccer is necessarily living up to those standards. (I don't blame them for losing the WC bid, though.) Also I wonder who's going to send him the next 17 pg report on the problems in the youth system.

Manchester United complete £16m signing of Phil Jones

• Blackburn defender heads to Old Trafford
• England Under-21 international signs five-year deal with United

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of the Blackburn defender Phil Jones on a five-year deal.

Jones passed a medical and agreed personal terms with United on Wednesday last week after the club met the £16m release clause in the player's contract, before Venky's, Blackburn's owners, stalled on the transfer amid interest from Liverpool.

However, Jones, who featured for England Under-21's in their opening European Championship match against Spain in Denmark, apparently told Rovers he did not wish to join any other club than United.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce it has signed an agreement with Blackburn Rovers for the transfer of Phil Jones," said a United statement. "The player passed a medical in Manchester last week and has agreed a five-year contract.

"The deal will be completed once the player returns from international duty."

It takes to four the number of United players who started last night's Under-21 game, emphasising the importance Sir Alex Ferguson is placing on youth as he rebuilds his squad in the wake of last month's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

"I've loved my time at Blackburn and I will always be a huge fan but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am looking forward to a new challenge," said Jones via Twitter.

Jones is expected to be joined at Old Trafford by the Spain goalkeeper David de Gea and Aston Villa's Ashley Young.

Welcome Jones. I'm glad its finally sorted, it looked as if it was going to get messy!! Hopefully him and Smalling with be our no.1 CB's in a few years time :)

Didier Drogba Gets Remarried

With the almost incessant scandals that emerge from the world of football it's refreshing to find that some players can behave themselves.

Take Didier Drogba for instance - the Chelsea star married his long-term partner this weekend in a private ceremony minus the opulence commonly associated with the world of millionaire footballers.
Drogba, 33, tied the knot with Lalla Diakite at the at the Marie de Monaco in Monaco.
