RONALDO DEDICATES GOLDEN BOOT TO REAL MA
MADRID, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated winning the Golden Boot for the 2010-2011 season by dedicating it to the fans of his club.
Ronaldo was the top scorer in Spain and all of Europe, scoring an incredible 40 goals in 34 league appearances in the season which finished on Saturday night.
His 40 goals are the highest total ever scored in one season in Spain and the two goals he scored against Almeria on Saturday night allowed him to beat the previous record, which had been shared by Telmo Zarra and Hugo Sanchez.
"It is very nice to win the Golden Boot, because it is down to the work of my teammates, of the technical staff and all of the directors at the club and also down to the support of the fans. This Golden Boot is not for me, it is for all of Real Madrid," said Ronaldo this Monday in sports paper Diario AS.
However, Ronaldo admitted that his personal success was tinged with disappointment as his 40 goals had not helped Real Madrid win the BBVA Primera Liga title in a competition in which his club was again second best to FC Barcelona.
His side did defeat Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, but was to again suffer disappointment when they were outplayed by their Catalan rivals in the semifinals of the Champions League losing 3-1 on aggregate.
"If you ask me whether or not I am very happy with the season, I have to say 'no', because Real Madrid hoped to win all of the titles and all we have won in the Copa del Rey, but we will work to make sure that next season we are able to win more trophies than this year," promised Ronaldo.
His side has already begun preparing for next season by signing Turkish midfielders Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop.
