Dutch club VVV-Venlo sign 1-year-old child

By Brooks Peck

YouTube videos have led to a number of footballers getting signed by clubs around the world, but this might be the first time it's worked for an 18-month-old. It's very much a publicity stunt, but the popular YouTube clip of young Baerke van der Meij kicking balls into his toy chest caught the attention of relegation-threatened Dutch top flight club VVV-Venlo and prompted the club to sign him to a 10-year professional contract. Though, it is made clear that the contract is a "symbolic" one.

The toddler joined VVV's star midfielder Ken Leemans during a training session in De Koel Stadium on Tuesday before being offered the "symbolic" contract.

"The toddler's favourite position has not yet been determined. However, we can speak of a right-footed player with a very good kicking technique, perseverance and, importantly: football genes via his grandfather," said a VVV Venlo press release.

Baerke's grandfather used to play for the club and his family still lives in the city of Venlo.

Benidorm stabbing provoked by row over Copa del Rey result

A 39-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of stabbing to death a young Pedreguer man in Benidorm.

The fatal incident was apparently triggered by a dispute relating to the outcome of the Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Barcelona, which Real won 1-0 in extra time.

The man responsible for the stabbing, who already has a long criminal record, was arrested less than twelve hours after the fatal assault occurred.

The attack occurred about 4.45am in Tomas Ortuño street, a central street in the tourist town of Benidorm.

The victim, a 25-year-old from the town of Pedreguer (Alicante) who had gone to Benidorm for a night out with friends, died from a single stab wound to the left side of his abdomen, which affected vital organs and killed him almost immediately.

Apparently, the young man and his friends got involved in an argument with a stranger over the football result, which then degenerated into a fight, during which the 39-year-old suddenly produced a large kitchen knife he was carrying hidden in his clothes and stabbed the victim without warning.

A friend of the deceased, who witnessed the assault, chased after the alleged perpetrator of the stabbing and punched him, but went back to his friend after also being threatened with the knife.

During the police operation, witness statements were taken from six different people, 140 local residents were interviewed and some 60 homes were searched.

Once identified, the perpertrator was kept under close surveillance by plain clothes police officers, before being arrested in his home, where the murder weapon was found along with the clothes the man was wearing during the attack.

i think i wanted to post this because with all the clasico wank we've had here in the last couple weeks, with all the wank and the tensions and the bitterness, i think we need to put this is perspective--at the very end of the day, cules or madridistas, win or lose, despite how incredibly fucking political this sport is in spain, at the end of the day, it's a sport. it's not worth a young kid getting stabbed over.

not asking for cules and madridistas to get along and sing kumbaya around the fire (unless you guys want to, duh) but just to remember that at the end of the day, it's a game, and no game is worth losing your life over.
