Darren Bent hands in transfer

request after '£18m Aston Villa bid'

Darren Bent has handed in a transfer request at Sunderland after Aston Villa reportedly tabled a bid of £18m for the striker. Sunderland have so far confirmed only that the written request was received after yesterday's Wear-Tyne derby but they have not revealed whether it was accepted.

It is believed the bid of £18m could rise to as much as £24m.(!) That would be a club record fee for Villa and would also represent a big coup for Gérard Houllier, as the embattled manager desperately tries to strengthen his side. They are fourth from bottom in the Premier League, outside of the relegation zone only by virtue of goals scored.

But the move could see Sunderland, currently sixth in the table and surprise contenders for a European spot, facing a fans' backlash for letting the 26-year-old England international depart.

Bent has scored 36 goals in 62 games since joining the club in a £10m deal from Tottenham Hotspur in 2009 and has netted 11 times this season.

funny. a month ago he said "I can't believe how well it's gone. If the offer of an extension came up I'd be more than happy to sign it. It's all about the football up here. It's all passion, passion, passion..."  hmm.

Dimitar Berbatov is a fan of Javier Hernandez.

Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has lauded his young teammate Javier Hernandez suggesting the prodigiously gifted Mexican international is not just hugely talented but also has the endeavour to match his ability.

The Bulgarian international, who has scored 14 Premier League goals to Hernandez’s six, believes ‘Chicharito’ has a great future ahead of him but already a real threat.

Berbatov believes Hernandez’s predatory instincts in front of goal, coupled with his blistering pace is a lethal combination which has already tested Premier League defences in his debut season at Old Trafford.

Speaking about Hernandez, Berbatov told MUTV:

"Every time when he goes onto the pitch, the only thing in Javier's mind is to score goals," Berbatov said. "He is trouble for defenders. Everybody knows he is very quick. If you give him space and time he is very dangerous. He has done really well and the future is ahead of him because he is still young. I have seen the way he works in practice and after that in the gym. If he keeps going like that he has a great future."
