OFFICIAL: Mexico defender Rafael Marquez joins New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls finally announced the signing of Rafael Marquez on Monday. The club had openly been seeking a third designated player throughout the transfer window and landed upon the Mexican international.

Over the weekend, Marquez and Barcelona reached an agreement to terminate his contract, freeing up the central defender to join Major League Soccer on a free transfer. The 31-year-old teams up with former Barca team-mate Thierry Henry in the Red Bulls lineup.

“Rafael has shown on the club and international level that he is one of the world’s top players,” said Dietmar Beiersdorfer, head of Red Bull Global Soccer, in a press release.

“He has been a winner at all levels and illustrated that he is a leader both on and off the field. We are thrilled that he decided to come to the Red Bulls at this time in his career.”

“I am excited to be joining the Red Bulls,” Marquez said. “Despite having the opportunity to fulfill my contract with Barcelona, coming to New York and playing in Major League Soccer was a chance that I could not refuse. I am completely committed to doing my very best to help the Red Bulls in their playoff push this year and compete for championships in the years to come.”

Marquez has spent the last decade playing in Europe. His performances for Atlas in the Mexican top division caught the eye of French club Monaco. The gritty defender then completed a transfer to Barcelona in 2003, where he won four La Liga titles.

In 2006 he partnered Carles Puyol in defence as the team won both the Spanish league and the Champions League, with Marquez's positioning and ability to play the ball out of the back taking a major role.

Internationally Marquez has captained Mexico since 2002 and has racked up 94 appearances. His trophy cabinet includes the 1999 Confederations Cup and the 2003 Gold Cup.

The Red Bulls will officially present Marquez on Tuesday.

LIGA total! Cup Final

hey guys
yesterday I saw LIGA total final match =D does anyone knows about it??!
anyway the final match was between Schalke and  FC Bayern Munich and Schalka won 3 to 1
Our bb Neuer held the Cup ^__^
here are the Highlight

I liked  Raul's second goal =D

Schalke 04 3-1 FC Bayern

The Bundesliga's latest star arrival Raul was in scintillating form has he netted a brace in Schalke's 3-1 friendly victory over Bayern in front of 38,236 fans in Gelsenkirchen.

Bayern, who were without eleven of their World Cup stars and had to fly in David Alaba as emergency cover, took an early lead when Jose Ernesto Sosa teed up Deniz Mujic for an easy finish.

But despite their promising start, the Bavarians were helpless as Spanish legend Raul continued his explosive debut weekend, tapping home a simple equaliser on 25 minutes after Edu's initial strike came back off the post.

That put Louis van Gaal's patchwork side on the back foot, and Schalke duly took the lead three minutes before half time, Edu this time finding the back of the net.

Shortly after the break Raul again showed why his is considered one of the greatest strikers of the last decade by audaciously chipping the ball over Bayern keeper Rouven Sattelmeier from the edge of the box to round off a comprehensive victory for the Royal Blues, as well as the Gelsenkirchen pre-season tournament trophy.

Luis Suarez Living La Vida Loca at Ajax

While other WC players are mostly on vacation or starting training or doing friendlies, Luis Suarez has been going at it in earnest at Ajax Amsterdam.

Missed his goal celebrations?
On July 28 he scored a crazy bicycle goal against PAOK (Greece) in the third round of qualifying for the Champions League:

Ajax-PAOK ended in 1-1 draw as PAOK's Ivic scored late in the game.

Missed his other antics?
3 days later he got a red card in the Dutch SuperCup final against Twente, for a straight leg kick a la Van Bommel (looked a bit accidental though).

Ajax eventually lost 0-1 against Twente.

He'll be suspended for 2 next Dutch matches but will play 2nd Champions League qualifying round with PAOK in Saloniki, this Wednesday 8/4/2010 at 21:45 (Greece time I guess).

I'll try to find a stream to watch as I miss this crazy kid and will follow him everywhere!

As a bonus here's great Sports Illustrated article about Forlan and Suarez, contrasting their good boy/bad boy backgrounds and styles.

Relevant quote: "In January 2007, he received three yellow cards and one red card in a five-game spell, in which he also scored four goals. It was typical Suarez." LOL enjoy!

out of many, one - club motto

I noticed a lack of Portuguese football and that made me sad because it is really quite awesome once you get into it. So I thought I'd pimp out my team aka Benfica (though the other two big ones are FC Porto and Sporting CP...I can answer questions on them too).

ANYWAY. Lets get onto the important parts. Ready? Good.  Collapse )

Puyol and Villa deny Cesc comments

Carles Puyol and David Villa have denied they've ever spoken to the British press about Cesc.

Puyol used his Blog (LOL WHO EVEN USES BLOGSPOT NOWADAYS) to say:

Hi everyone, these past days a British news media outlet has published some statements supposedly mine that are totally false, I just saw them and I can guarantee that I have not said anything nor talked to anybody about this subject. Cheers.”
Villa has also denied he's ever talked to the Daily Star, source, a Twitter account called Barcastuff, who rounds up all press and promo regarding the club on one Twitter account.

So all supposed Barca TVs, stupid blogs and biased websites are fake fake fake as a tranny's fanny :) As the great problematique says, "the only shit talking statements from barca players are to spanish sources ty"

In other news, I almost fell into a dug up construction hole because I stared at a guy who looked exactly like Jesus Navas. Freaky hypno-eyes and all. Wearing a Navas shirt.
