[Football] Sergio y Xabi

Iker Interview

AS published an interview with Iker Casillas today, billed as his first since the World Cup. And of course, it was with his friend Carmen Colino (he even attended her wedding). I’m glad he’s back to talking to the press, since he kept quiet for the first month or so of the tournament. It’s a really nice interview, so read on for words from nuestro capitán. And once again, it just affirms how much I love him, and what an amazing leader the team has, and what an amazing person Spain has. The entire country, and all fans from elsewhere, should be proud of him.

And I love the recollection of his conversation with Cannavaro!

Liverpool hand Joe Cole No10 shirt as midfielder signs four-year deal
• 28-year-old passes medical and completes move
• Cole is with Liverpool at training camp in Switzerland

Liverpool have completed the signing of Joe Cole on a four-year contract after he passed his medical – and have handed the midfielder the No10 shirt.

The 28-year-old agreed personal terms on Monday having being released by Chelsea at the end of last season and then flew to the club's training camp in Switzerland to undergo his physical examination.

Liverpool's manager, Roy Hodgson, meanwhile, has told defender Philipp Degen he can look for a new club.

The Switzerland international has struggled to make an impact since arriving at Anfield from Borussia Dortmund in July 2008. "We have had an amicable conversation with Philipp and he wants to play football," said Hodgson. "We won't stand in his way and he is free to look for another club."

'The biggest club in the country'

After passing a medical and completing the formalities of his Anfield move, Joe Cole sat down with Liverpoolfc.tv to give his first interview as a Liverpool player.

First of all Joe, on behalf of our fans all over the world welcome to Liverpool Football Club...

Thank you very much. I'm glad to be here.

What have the past 48 hours been like?

They have been crazy. I set myself a deadline to make a decision and when I made it I sent a text to Christian Purslow and Steven Gerrard and then turned my phone off. I know I have made the right decision and I am looking forward to the challenge. This is a challenge for me. I have played in London all my life. I could have stayed at Chelsea because the fans loved me and I won things, but I wanted to challenge myself and when I knew Liverpool were interested it was a no-brainer because they are the biggest club in the country.

He could be a fan favourite to say the least, what a signing :).

Even the cack shirt doesn't make that picture less surreal and epic.

it was a no-brainer because they are the biggest club in the country.

GERARD HOULLIER has launched an astonishing attack on former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez by claiming it was he that was largely responsible for the club’s Champions League final triumph.

And the 63-year-old Frenchman believes the Spaniard was lucky to inherit a club in good health but has ultimately destroyed that legacy for new manager and close friend Roy Hodgson.

Speaking of Liverpool’s memorable win over AC Milan five years ago, Houllier said: “Twelve out of 14 in Istanbul were players I had signed or developed.

“I left Liverpool with a team and in the Champions League.

"But when you finish seventh with Torres and Gerrard…

I love you, you old, senile man but you are old and senile. Also good job making both Stevie and Carra look classy, because those two are the only ones left over from your time, LOL. I wonder who texted it.

Anyway he's basically the best example about why man-managers don't always work. He gave Stevie his first chance and basically raised him on the pitch. He was a good manager in some respects, but when he left, Stevie was like his spoiled baby, lol. I'm glad Rafa came in and kicked Stevie's balls and forced him to grow up and become the player he is today. Anyone who hates on Rafa's managing style needs to realize that these are grown men getting paid astronomical fees, they shouldn't be hand-held like babies.

Barcelona’s Marquez extremely close to New York Red Bull deal

Barcelona defender/midfielder Rafael Marquez is believed to be extremely close to agreeing a deal with MLS outfit New York Red Bull.

Reports suggest the 31-year old Mexico national team captain will soon sign a four-year deal worth $2.8million a year.

Marquez’s arrival in the North American top flight will be a major coup with the Latin-American community likely to get right behind the player who has had a brilliantly successful career thus far.

It will also be a huge inclusion for the Red Bulls who only last week unveiled the signing of Marquez’s former Barcelona teammate and ex-Arsenal and France star Thierry Henry.

I don't know how to feel about this, I'm sad he'll leave Barca but he'll be in the US!

Eduardo is officially signed to Shakhtar Donetsk

Reds in talks over Riera sale.

Liverpool are in talks with Olympiacos over the sale of winger Albert Riera.

The Spaniard played no part in Wednesday night's friendly draw with Grasshoppers as discussions over his future continue with the Greek outfit.

Roy Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Albert Riera did not play as a precaution because negotiations are ongoing with Olympiacos."

Riera signed from Espanyol in August 2008 and has scored five goals in 56 appearances.
