schelotto is ~flawless and free

Congrats, Paraguay. I should probably have more faith in these guys

I hoped for so much today, but expected so little. A spectacular loss would not have bothered me--but what kills me is how incredibly fucking hard they tried, and how close they came.

Thank you Paraguay for making me proud to have supported you. You can go out of this tournament knowing you did incredibly well, and that you could not possibly have done any more than you did today. So many teams could learn so much from your spirit.

Vamos, albirroja--See you in 2014.

Maradona lashing out from the emotions

Argentina national team coach Diego Maradona had an altercation with German fans after the end of the match that marked the elimination of said team from the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

Apparently upset over post game celebrations by fans located behind the Argentinean bench, Maradona approached and scolded them, until Dalma, one of his daughters, entered the field and contained him.

The Real Reason The World Cup is So Coveted

(Apparently the Coke!World Cup comes with a fake Dutch kit and a sultry cop.)

Police in Colombia have seized a replica World Cup trophy - made from 11 kilos of cocaine.

The statue - complete with engravings and painted decorations - was discovered during a security check at Bogota airport.

It was made with cocaine mixed with a moulding agent, believed to be gasoline, and was bound for an address in the Spanish capital Madrid.

It was found in a mail warehouse.

Anti-drug chief Colonel Jose Piedrahita said the 14in high replica was packed inside a box and was painted gold with green stripes on the base.

Col Piedrahita said that laboratory tests confirmed the cup was made of 11 kilos (24 pounds) of the class A drug.

Gerrard to FIFA: "Why aren't the players ever asked?"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Steven Gerrard today backed calls for the introduction of goal-line technology.

The England captain and his teammates were left deflated by the decision not to award Frank Lampard's 'goal' in the World Cup last-16 tie with Germany last weekend - despite the ball clearly crossing the line.

UEFA experimented with extra officials during Europa League matches last season and Gerrard believes the system is the minimum that should have been adopted for the South Africa finals.

He said: "It was a success then. Why not use the same system at the World Cup?

"If there had been a linesman behind the German goal then maybe England would still be in the World Cup."

FIFA confirmed in the aftermath of England's defeat to Germany they would reopen their investigation into the feasibility of installing goal-line technology.

Gerrard feels the players themselves should be consulted for their thoughts during the review process.

"When these decisions are made they are always made by officials," said the Liverpool star. "They don't play the game, do they?

Stevie's right in every way. There were extra goal line officials used during the Europa League. Liverpool benefitted once from the extra official who awarded a goal to Dirk Kuyt in the quarter finals. Stevie's also right about the sad fact that it's the officials making all these decisions, and they don't even play the game. dun worry stevie, the german demolition of argentina proved that maybe it wasn't england being bad, it was germany being good - really really really really good

Guess who's a father

It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy. As agreed with the baby's mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship. No further information will be provided on this subject and I request everyone to fully respect my right to privacy (and that of the child) at least on issues as personal as these are.

ETA: Okay so all the skeptics on twitter and i guess here too are waiting on official word from his management company (which makes sense).... will update if more comes up... (oh and sorry for lack of tags my mind went blank and couldn't think)

Brazil returns home and Julio César bursts into tears

Brazil returns home after World Cup elimination

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil's national team returned home Sunday to a friendly welcome despite its surprise elimination from the World Cup quarterfinals.

The team's chartered plane landed first in Rio de Janeiro, where players, including goalkeeper Julio Cesar and defender Juan, were warmly applauded.

The plane then flew to Sao Paulo for other players to stay there or take connections elsewhere. Coach Dunga flew south to Porto Alegre.

Some fans also gathered at Sao Paulo's airport, but the players could not be seen as they left through side doors.

Brazil was eliminated Friday 2-1 by the Netherlands.

Roy fears for Fergie friendship

New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is concerned that he may have placed his 'excellent relationship' with Sir Alex Ferguson in jeopardy by moving to Anfield.

The former Fulham boss is fretting over making a first phone call to the Manchester United chief since being unveiled on Merseyside on Thursday.

Liverpool and United are arch-rivals and Hodgson fears that it could put a strain on his friendship with Ferguson.

The Reds boss said: "I know Sir Alex is not really a Liverpool man so I'm a bit concerned about my excellent relationship with him.

"I hope he forgives me for moving north and, hopefully, we can have a glass of wine together, maybe in secret.

"I hope that's how he is going to see it but he is one of the people I intend to ring to find out.

"When I rang the Fulham chairman to say I wished to move to Liverpool, that was one call I had to get out of the way and Alex might be the next one.

Cristiano Ronaldo has had a baby boy with an American woman he had fling with, it was claimed today.
A shock announcement appeared on the former Manchester United star's website claiming he had become a father.
It appeared in English and Portuguese in the early hours today on the 25-year-old Real Madrid striker's website, Twitter and Facebook pages.
It said: "It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become a father to a baby boy. As agreed with the baby's mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship."
Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha said the baby's mother is from the US and gave birth at the beginning of June.
His family are preparing the paperwork to bring the child to Portugal where he will be raised, it reported.

It said a friend of the footballer had confirmed his mother Dolores and sisters Elma and Katia are preparing the documentation to bring the child to Europe.
In 2009 Ronaldo spent his summer holidays in Los Angeles and Miami after signing for Real Madrid from Manchester United for a world record £80million.
He was reported to have bedded four women in four days during the trip, having just dumped long-term Spanish girlfriend Nereida Gallardo by text message.

However, if the report in Portugal is correct the baby must have been conceived around September last year when the star was already playing for the Spanish giants.

Last month he was spotted enjoying a five-day break on a yacht with Russian underwear model Irina Shayk.
The couple were pictured on the £50,000-a-week rented boat off the coast of Corsica.
The 5ft 10ins green eyed beauty today posted on her Facebook page the message "My boyfriend is, now, the father of a boy", the newspaper said.

Ronaldo's management company Gestifute confirmed the footballer's announcement was genuine, Correio da Manha added.
