now that the initial excitement's over...

"The World Cup may be important for the high-powered people, but it means nothing for us on the streets." x

DELFT, SOUTH AFRICA -- Shirley Fisher says she was evicted from a hostel near a stadium where soccer's biggest stars train. Natasha Flores says she was driven out of squatters' quarters near a new $450 million stadium in one of Cape Town's busiest tourist areas.

Both ended up in Blikkiesdorp, a settlement of corrugated-iron shacks ringed by a concrete fence, home to hundreds of evicted families. Many residents say there is only one reason they wound up in this bleak place, which in Afrikaans means "tin-can town."

"The World Cup," said Fisher, 41, without hesitation.

Rafael Benitez ~unveiled~

Inter's new coach Rafael Benitez was unveiled to the media today in a press conference at the Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti.

The Spanish tactician signed a two-year contract with the Italian and European champions last week after a six-year spell with Premier League outfit Liverpool.

"I want to thank Inter for this opportunity, and the fans too, who immediately welcomed me with affection. I am very pleased and proud to be here," said Benitez, who sat alongside Inter chief executive Ernesto Paolillo, vice managing director Stefano Filucchi and technical director Marco Branca.

i thought that the liverpool fans would be interested in some of those comments cause something obviously changed for him to leave. it will be hard for rafa at first because jose is beloved and not just because he won the treble. however if rafa shows the same loving that he showed liverpool then things should work out fine. i don't expect massive changes in style for inter but we'll see!!

Franz Beckenbauer attacks England's 'kick and rush'

• Former Germany captain says England have gone backwards
• Germans have advantage with Jabulani, says Carragher

Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer has launched a scathing attack on England's style of play and claimed Fabio Capello's side have "gone backwards into the bad old times of kick and rush".

Beckenbauer, one of the most decorated footballers of all time and captain of the triumphant West Germany team of 1974, claimed Capello had been rendered powerless by the paucity of English players featuring regularly in the higher echelons of the Premier League. The clubs' willingness to buy from abroad, he argued, has come back to haunt the national side.

"What I saw from the English in their 1-1 draw against the United States had very little to do with football," Beckenbauer wrote in a South African newspaper after watching England's draw on Saturday.

"It looked to me as if the English have gone backwards into the bad old times of kick and rush. I am not sure if the England coach Fabio Capello can still change much there. The English are being punished for the fact that there are very few English players in the Premier League clubs as they use better foreign players from all over the world."

HUZZAH!

Daniel Agger has reasserted his commitment to Liverpool despite the departure of the man who brought him to Anfield.

The 25-year-old, who was signed by Rafael Benitez in January 2006, claims the Spaniard's exit has no bearing on his future.

"The time with him was good. He is a good manager, he knows his stuff and he knows what football is about," said Agger.

"When I return from my summer holiday, I'll see what is new, but his exit has no bearing on my future. I'm committed to Liverpool."

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has wished Benitez all the best in his new job in Italy.

"I would like to thank Rafael Benitez for what he did for me and wish him luck at Inter Milan," he said.

"Hopefully we can get a manager as quickly as we can, then we can start to look to the future."
