£10m Gladiators: Rooney, Fabregas, Drogba, Gerrard, Villa + Ronaldo

At the World Cup final in Johannesburg on July 11, Wayne Rooney hopes to help England conquer the world. In London six days later, it will all get a lot more personal.

That's because England's talisman will take on five of the world's best players in a gladiator-esque skills head-to-head at the O2 arena.

Sportsmail can exclusively reveal that Rooney will join Cesc Fabregas, Didier Drogba, Steven Gerrard, David Villa and Cristiano Ronaldo on Saturday, July 17, at the A:3K, competing against them in five different skill sets.

The two highest points scorers will progress to a dramatic final test of their abilities. Each player is said to be earning in the region of £500,000.

Ten million pounds has been spent on securing the six players and kitting out the arena with all the necessary lights and pyrotechnics as organisers attempt to produce a footballing equivalent of Cirque Du Soleil.

'Aura Entertainment is delighted to confirm that Wayne Rooney will be the sixth competitor in the inaugural A:3K Football event at the O2 Arena in July,' said director Terry Byrne, who is David Beckham's former agent.

Gill - Money is not an issue

United chief claims Ferguson will have money to spend

Manchester United chief executive David Gill insists there are no restrictions on Sir Alex Ferguson in the transfer market.

After the £80million sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, Ferguson failed to re-invest the majority of the proceeds, causing discontent among supporters who saw the move as servicing the financial burden brought on the club by owner Malcolm Glazer and his family.

Ferguson's claims that there was "no value in the market" after the huge fees paid by the likes Real Madrid and Manchester City distorted an already inflated market were met by scepticism by the Old Trafford faithful.

However, Gill claims that Ferguson will definitely have the funds to spend in the summer and has rejected suggestions the decorated manager would make false claims.

He told The Independent: "The money is there. People say Alex is saying that because he has to. Anyone who knows Alex Ferguson knows he wouldn't say that if he didn't mean what he said.

Ferreira quashes fans' moustache bid

Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira has quashed talk that his side would grow moustaches as a gesture of solidarity before (and during) the World Cup.

A Facebook group has been set up by fans in the hope that the Portuguese would grow their facial hair for the same reasons that Romania's squad all bleached their hair in 1998.

The group, titled Queremos a Selecção com bigode na África do Sul (We want the selection with a moustache in South Africa), has over 3,000 fans and some supporters were seen holding up banners during the 0-0 draw with the Cape Verde Islands.

However, Ferreira claimed Portugal would not be pulling such a stunt. ''I don't think so, I could never see myself with a moustache. It would only make us figures of fun,'' he told the Daily Mail.

I think they woulda looked handsome :D

France win race to host Euro 2016!

• France beat Turkey by one vote in race to stage Euro 2016
• Italy eliminated in first round of voting

Michel Platini announces France will host Euro 2016

France were today named by Uefa as the hosts of the 2016 European Championship. In the vote by Uefa's executive committee, France beat bids by Turkey and Italy.

It will be the first time that 24 countries will contest the tournament, up from 16 in 2012, and will come 18 years after France hosted the first 32-team World Cup in 1998. France beat Turkey by one vote after Italy were eliminated in the first round of voting.

Jean-Pierre Escalettes, president of the French Football Federation, said: "This is a beautiful day for us. It is a moment of intense emotion to know that in 2016 France will welcome European football and will fulfil its promises.

"What counts for us is to have the full confidence of Uefa and this trust will not be betrayed.

"We also understand the frustration of Italy and Turkey – particularly Turkey, who lost by a single vote after bidding for a third time."

France last hosted the European Championship in 1984 when they won the tournament by a side captained by Michel Platini, who is now Uefa president.

Obama, Bill Clinton Greet U.S. World Cup Team at White House

"I want to be on this team just for the shoes," Clinton said about the particularly snazzy light brown footwear of the players and coaches. "This is the only team that I've ever seen that had these cool shoes."

Biden and Clinton arrived before Obama, who was still at a Rose Garden celebration of NCAA men's basketball champ the Duke Blue Devils.

But once Obama arrived, he agreed with Clinton. "This is the best dressed soccer team I've ever seen," he said. "Those are some sharp shoes."

Schweinski Spam. Because it's been too freaking long!

The World Cup is only a couple of days away. And when it comes to bromances,
this is one that tends to show up in big tournaments. Not only do they have
amazing on-the-pitch & off-the-pitch chemistry, these two define the word
adorkable (if there isn't already a definition for it, it belongs to Schweinski now).
If you were to say they are the KINGS of BROMANCE...

You'd be right.

They're so amazing, that they attract even
non-German NT fans into their web of adorkableness.

Hell, if there was a World Cup given for the Best Romance, you can bet
your ass that they'd win it (sit down, other bromantic relationships).

you need to know that this bromance might just harm your computer.
If you are viewing this from an iPod, or other mobile device - it will crash.

Fearless Spain ready for World Cup

Surprised no one has posted this yet... It's a fantastic article by Sid Lowe (how fucking fabulous is he as a writer?), who basically faps about the Spanish national team for 3/4 of the article then, ends on a foreboding/uneasy note. But whatev. It still made me super excited and patriotic for a country that isn't even my own. ♥!

U.S. president Franklin D Roosevelt famously insisted that the only thing to fear was fear itself.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque would say exactly the opposite. The only thing Spain has to fear as it prepares for this summer's World Cup in South Africa is the complete lack of fear.

I scored a goal in the World Cup Final

I know a lot of people on here hate ESPN but you have to admit they do somethings right, like this! They have a series, 'I scored a goal in the FIFA World Cup Final,' where former players go back to the stadium and talk about that moment. Here are a few but go to ESPN to view the rest!

Jairzinho - Brazil, 1970

Expectations were high for Jairzinho going into the 1970 World Cup -- despite two broken legs in recent years. But few could have imagined the performance Brazil's right winger: seven goals in the tournament, one in each of Brazil's matches. He remains the only player to score in every round, including the final. His last goal came in the 71st minute, again from the creativity of Brazil's maestro, Pelé. Rushing into the box from the right, Jairzinho timed his pace perfectly to land at the receiving end of Pelé's header.
