decade in review

PLAYER OF THE DECADE: Zinedine Zidane, France
Zizou gets our Player of the Decade nod, barely beating out Ronaldinho, who also won two World Player of the Year awards this decade but didn't have anything approaching Zidane's longevity at the top of the global game. No player since Diego Maradona has provided as much joy to viewers who love the artistry of soccer. Case in point: France's stunning upset of Brazil in the 2006 World Cup quarterfinals, in which Zidane rediscovered his mojo on the game's biggest stage. (Bonus points for scoring the greatest goal of the decade in the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen.)

landon to everton loan confirmed, haters to the left

Everton's loan deal for Landon Donovan has been completed.

The USA international will now join the Toffees at the start of the January transfer window, staying on Merseyside until mid-March.

Everton officials have been in negotiations with the LA Galaxy, Donovan's MLS club, since last week and the deal is now complete, subject to a successful work permit application.

"It's all done now," said Blues manager David Moyes at Friday's press conference. "Landon will join us at the start of January,

"He will come in and add pace, he's a good finisher and has captained the USA national team so he has that experience.

"He is the first of two or three players I want to bring in in January."

Donovan, 27, is his country's leading international goalscorer and is also their most capped player with 120 appearances.

Regarded as his nation's best ever player, he won the MLS Most Valuable player and goal of the season awards for the 2009 campaign, which concluded last month.

The player has previously played in Europe for Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen and joins compatriot Tim Howard at Goodison Park.

I'm so excited for this, I think he'll do great. He also signed a new contract with the Galaxy for 4 years, $2.25 million/year. Which is the entire salary cap for the league. (Though if he does well at Everton and at the World Cup, I have a feeling he'll move on, they've lowered his release clause too supposedly.) And I know the majority of people on here hate Landon and/or Everton, but I love him unconditionally, so haters to the left.

Simeon Jackson named Canadian male soccer player of the year

OTTAWA — Simeon Jackson's most memorable moments of 2009 came just a week apart - and they helped the Mississauga, Ont., striker earn the Canadian male soccer play of the year award.

Jackson scored Gillingham FC's winning goal - a header in the 91st minute - in a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury on May 23, a pivotal game in front of 53,7006 fans at Wembley Stadium that helped his team earn a promotion to League One in England.

A week later, he made a distinguished debut with the Canadian team, scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Cyprus.

"Those two games were the two big highlights for me," Jackson said on a conference call Friday. "It's an honour to win this award and I didn't even think I was going to be one of the players who was going to get nominated, but it's good to be recognized on that level."

The 22-year-old Jackson captured the award for the first time, edging Toronto FC midfielders Dwayne De Rosario and Julian de Guzman. Veteran striker Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, B.C., was named Canada's top female player for the fifth consecutive time Thursday.

Jackson scored nine goals in 25 League Two appearances in the second half of the 2008-09 season, including three goals in the final two playoff games.

He also played for Canada at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the summer, helping the Canadians reach the quarter-finals.
