Messi in doubt for Saturday

Leo Messi has a 1-2 degree sprain in his right ankle that puts him in doubt for the derby with Espanyol on Saturday. His availability depends on the Club Medical Services.

Just after scoring a magnificent free kick, Leo Messi was injured following a crunching tackle from Almeida. The resulting sprain means he may well miss this weekend’s match, with just three days to recover.

oh boy I sure am glad that the ref took control of that match it wasn't like Messi was getting mugged the whole time or anything!!!!!!!! :\

ps first post. ps i know people are tired of barca post so i hope this is ok.

Steven Gerrard is in no doubt Liverpool will start scaling the Barclays Premier League following the return of their 'main man' - Fernando Torres.

El Nino played the final 25 minutes of the 2-1 defeat to Fiorentina after a month on the sidelines with a groin injury.

Gerrard believes the Spanish star's return will give the entire team a lift heading into a crucial festive calendar.

He told "If we get back to our full-strength team, and we get people fit, we're confident we are good enough to finish in the top four.

"Torres's return is massive for me, massive for everyone. He's the main man, he's our top scorer and we need him back firing. If that happens I'm sure we'll move back up the league and get in them top four places.

"Without a doubt that has to be the main aim this season. It's obviously important for the club, and having played in the Champions League for such a long time, it's very important.

"We'll be right up for the Arsenal game on Sunday. If we can get three points there and then take that into the Wigan game, we can turn a corner."

Despite the main focus being on the top four, Gerrard insists Liverpool will take the Europa League seriously.

The likes of Juventus and Benfica could lie in wait, while the Reds could also meet neighbours Everton at some stage - a prospect Gerrard would relish.

He said: "We'll take it very seriously. We've got to try to win a trophy this year. The FA Cup and the Europa League are our two best chances of that.

"There are some good teams in there. I don't think we're seeded because we lost this game, so I'm sure we'll come up against a big side.

"It would be very nice if we were to come up against Everton! We'll have to see what the draw gives us."

Meanwhile, Gerrard was full of praise for Alberto Aquilani after his full debut on Wednesday - and even dared to compare the Italy international to Xabi Alonso.

"I said in my programme notes that this game was all about giving minutes to certain players and getting the injured players back. It was nice for Aquilani to get out there and get his first start," said the skipper.

"He can dictate the tempo of a game. He's a clever player, a good passer. I don't want to tempt fate but he's very similar to Xabi."

Now You All Go 'Awwwww'

As you know, footballing careers doesn't last forever, so ballers pass the time by doing various stuff. Let it be sextapes, pornography, modelling, acting, charity work and

Even though Theo Walcott is still a cute lil' kid, the boy's been signed up to write two childrens books about a hero schoolboy whos a 'soccer wonderkid'.
Remind you of anyone, 'ahem' Theo?

But like srsly, how can you resist his cuteness. Even though does look like a bit of a dork there.

"Theo, who is working on turning the books into a series, confessed last night that the adventures of school new boy TJ mirror his OWN life.

He grinned: "Many of my experiences as a young footballer will be relived by TJ in the stories.
"I'm really excited to be working on this series."

Aww. Good one someone whos not looking to sex, porn and violence as the answer for 'extra-curricular' activities.

Injury blow for Essien
Chelsea midfielder unlikely to return until New Year

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has been ruled out for at least three weeks after suffering a tear in his right hamstring.

The Ghana international limped out of Tuesday night's UEFA Champions League clash with Apoel Nicosia after drawing Chelsea level in the contest.

Fears of a lengthy spell on the sidelines were sparked immediately and a scan on Wednesday revealed the extent of the damage.

Chelsea expect Essien to be fit to play within four weeks, meaning he may not make a return to the side before the start of the African Cup of Nations on 10th January.

sigh, 2009 has been an awful year for injuries for all teams, the sooner we move into 2010 the better.

hey guys, i don't know if you all are aware of omg_yanks, but a lot of us men's and women's national team and mls news/info/whatever is posted there more than here, if you're looking for diversity~

here is some news:
Philly poised to replicate Seattle's success (i personally think it's a 50/50 situation - for every expansion team that comes out gunning, there's another that sucks until they find their feet)
Garber visits Montreal to discuss future expansion (i'd rather it not expand in canada anymore, tbqh, and that they eventually get their own league)
Report: Raul Possibly Headed To MLS This Summer (dislike, probably false anyway)
Key U.S. defender DeMerit begins comeback
Aaaaand two articles on the recent World Cup draw: ESPN says
U.S. won't overlook its opponents (oh, unlike england?) and has some info about them, and The Guardian says Hopes of a repeat of 1950 defeat of England drive USA's ambition.

And while on that 1950 defeat of England:

Torneo Apertura 2009

This weekend will be the last round of matches of Torneo Apertura, and the thing is still pretty intense.

Gimnasia de la Plata 0 - 2 Newell's Old Boys

Newell's Old Boys won their match against Gimnasia de La Plata, with goals by Mauro Formica and Joaquín Boghossian, both on the first half. The team didn't have to make much effort to defeat Gimnasia, win a place in the next Libertadores Cup, and place themselves momentarily at the top of the table.

Banfield 1 - 0 Tigre

Their lead didn't last long, however, because some hours later, Banfield defeated Tigre and went back to the top. Banfield had an incredibly tough time defeating the last team on the table, because Tigre focused on defending their own goal instead of attacking, and didn't approach Banfield's goal at all. The Taladro players, under pressure after Newell's victory, could finally score thanks to Victor Lopez after a free kick, when 6' were left for the end of the match.

Yesterday's other result was San Lorenzo's loss against Lanús. The team from Boedo was superior during the whole game, but an incredible ball and a shot by Gastón Aguirre against his own goal resulted in their defeat, and left his team out of the fight to enter the Libertadores Cup.

Other results were:
Colón 1 - 0 Godoy Cruz, goal by Federico Nieto. (Colón won their place for the next Libertadores Cup)
Boca 0 - 0 Huracán
Independiente 1 - 1 Argentinos, goals by Darío Gandín (I) and Gonzalo Prósperi (A). With this result, Independiente's out of the fight for the title and out of the Libertadores Cup.

The games for today are Chacarita-Velez, Arsenal-Atlético de Tucumán, and River-Racing.

SO here's a game we will play.. I hope you'll play with me?
The game is where you post five fun, serious or random facts about you... football related or not, it's up to you.

If you get really stuck here are some topics you might want to cover - phobias; pets; life changing events; pet names; pet peeves; favorite things.. blahblahblah. I'm sure you can think of better things though!

Just don't go posting your address or something... that's a no-no. It's only meant to be fun, so you don't need to write an essay, a line would do. Maybe we will learn some things about one another! (:
