Cesc Fabregas news

Its old news but Cesc says he may stay forever. (well, sort of)

CESC: I could happily end my career at Arsenal

Cesc Fabregas has hinted that he will stay at Arsenal despite growing interest from FC Barcelona.

Joan Laporta has noted that a deal is in the works for Cesc to move back to Camp Nou to play for his former club, FC Barcelona, next year. However, Cesc doesn't seem too happy to go back.

Cesc- "I do not think about it because I do not want to and I do not think I should," the 22-year-old said. "I am at a great club, with a great team and am happy. We have a long season in front of us, and the last thing I want to do is get disconnected from what I have to do playing for Arsenal, who are the club which pays me. I am really looking forward to a great season."

When asked whether he will stay at the North London side he says, "Why not? I have never really thought about it, staying here all my life, because you never know what your career will bring. It is my seventh season now, I am really happy, better than ever, so you never know."

Arsenal face Standard Liege at the Emirates Stadium today- a game that Fabregas will captain.

On his captaincy- "It was difficult at the start - I am a guy who does not like to say to everyone 'come on', because I feel I am nobody to say these things. I have learned a lot. I know my job and responsibilities as a captain now. Everybody is helping me, and together we are all doing very well. It is true more than before that if I need to say something now, I feel more capable than maybe a year ago."

Babel has beef with team mates (with pepper, homie)

RYAN BABEL is edging closer to the Anfield exit after launching an astonishing attack on manager Rafa Benitez and his team-mates.

The Dutchman, who misses tonight’s Champions League clash with Debrecen due to injury, insists Benitez is partly to blame for his failure to make the grade in the Premier League.

And the 22-year-old claims his progress has been hampered by the “selfish” attitude of some Reds stars.

Babel’s comments look set to be the final nail in his Liverpool career with Benitez likely to offload the under-achieving winger during the January transfer window.

“I have tried to talk to the manager but it isn't of any use,” Babel said.

“I couldn't really do anything with the feedback Benitez gave me.

“His philosophy is simple – try your hardest in training and then your chance will come. But sometimes I wonder how long I can sustain it.

“Many players can play lots of bad matches and still keep their credits – I can't.

“Benitez is not a man who will give you his trust straightaway. Benitez is a manager who in certain situations can do exactly the opposite of what you expect several times.

“Every time me or my agent (Willie Haatrecht) have a chat with him he stresses I can't leave and he believes in me.

“We have to trust he is telling the truth. Saying it is different to showing it. We have agreed to look at my situation during the winter break. If there's no improvement then, I have to be honest, I want to play somewhere else.

“I still want to stay at Liverpool. I just have the feeling, for many people, I still have to prove myself.

“I think that is unjustified and a pity. I have shown I can do it plenty of times. I know I could be further in my career but if nobody helps you, if they don't make it easier for you then it is difficult.

“In 2½ years with Liverpool I have never started three matches in a row.”

Babel, who has come off the bench 58 times out of his 105 Liverpool appearances, was also critical of his Anfield team-mates.

“All the forwards, they always live for their own success. It is hard for someone who isn't selfish by nature to act selfish,” he said.

“I don't know if my team-mates were shocked by my new character but I do notice once in a while they get confused.

“Normally I would pass the ball – now I take the shot myself more often. I see how they look at me with a face that says; 'Hey I am free!'

“But I'm not going to explain it any further because they don't give me any explanation when I ask for the ball.

“We have a lot of different cultures and on the pitch we are a tight group. But outside the pitch everyone goes their own way.

“The Spanish-speaking guys are very close. The youths hang out together. And I get along with Benayoun and Lucas.

“Dirk Kuyt? I don't really hang out with him. Dirk got accepted in the group of the Spanish-speaking players. He is very friendly with them and it looks as if he understands their jokes.”

Babel signed for £11.5million from Ajax in the summer of 2007 but after a promising first season, when he was voted Liverpool's Young Player of the Year, he has regularly failed to impress.

He also complained about not being allowed to wear his favourite blue boots - "As a Liverpool player I can't play in my blue Nike boots. They strongly discourage me from doing that.Blue is Everton's colour and Liverpool and Everton are rivals in everything."

What perfect timing, right before a season-defining match.

hi um...some Fiorentina news *ducks*

A Juan Vargas penalty in the 28th minute was enough to see the Viola successfully navigate their way through the group stages for the first time in the new format (they previously qualified in 1999-2000 season under the old format (thanks to bustedflush)). A sell-out crowd of over 35,000 witnessed Fiorentina's historic achievement as they also became the first Italian representatives to qualify for the knockout round this year.

For Fiorentina's French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey, whose two fine saves at the death helped the Italians hold onto victory, this was a handy reminder to those back in his homeland of what he is capable of.
"I am French but I'm just so happy about this qualification, we were so motivated today, this is a huge emotion," he said."We've grown, we've matured, we've changed a few players, however at home we've always managed to impose our game."Away from home all the other teams are very good but at home we've played exceptionally."It's true that when I play French teams I do want to prove a point but I don't think of it as an injustice (that France coach Raymond Domenech continues to overlook him), although it does hurt."

Alberto Gilardino: "We risked almost nothing, with not many chances created and exploited. The feeling with Vargas? Juan has left a very unique mark. He passes well, but also makes beautiful goals. He is doing well and this is important for Fiorentina."

Juan Manuel Vargas: "Also [coach Cesare] Prandelli complimented us for this victory," he said.

"Qualifying for the next round is an amazing achievement for us and also today we played as a great team.

"It's a deserved qualification, a great evening, we're happy to have lived it with our fans. We are now more aware of our strength in the Champions League compared to last season.

"We are more calm and we're aware we can do well. Now we have to continue like this, also in the [Italian] league."

Simply Arsene

Arsene Wenger is the most quotable man alive. Therefore, if you haven't already seen football365's article, I'm cutting and pasting all 60 quotes here. : ] easypeasy. (stop me if you think you've seen this one before)

1. [Upon being asked what he does with his spare time] "I watch football."

2."I tried to watch the Tottenham match on television in my hotel yesterday, but I fell asleep."

3."When I first came to Arsenal, I realised the back four were all university graduates in the art of defending. As for Tony Adams, I consider him to be a doctor of defence. He is simply outstanding."

4.[On the qualities of Dennis Bergkamp] "Intelligence and class. Class is of course, most of the time linked to what you can do with the ball, but the intelligence makes you use the technique in an efficient way. It's like somebody who has a big vocabulary but he doesn't say intelligent words, and somebody who has a big vocabulary but he can talk intelligently, and that's what Dennis is all about. What he does, there's always a head and always a brain. And his technique allows him to do what he sees, and what he decides to do."

5. [After the Arsenal fans booed a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough in November 1998] "If you eat caviar every day it's difficult to return to sausages."

GERRARD: LET'S GO AND WIN EUROPA LEAGUE

Steven Gerrard reflected on Liverpool's European heartbreak and declared: 'Now let's go and win the Europa League.'
A fourth minute strike from David Ngog gave the Reds a 1-0 victory over Debrecen in Budapest - but it wasn't enough to save their Champions League status as Fiorentina beat Lyon in Italy.

While Gerrard accepts it is a blow to have bowed out of the tournament at the group stage, the captain is confident the season can still end in success for Rafael Benitez's side.

"The disappointing thing was having to rely on other teams going into tonight," said Gerrard.

"We've played fantastically well tonight and deserved the three points, so it's disappointing that we won't progress in the Champions League.

"You get what you deserve in this competition and the two late goals we conceded against Lyon have been crucial. But it's gone now - it's in the past and we've got to move on.

"We're in the Europa League and we'll go and try to win it.

"Tonight's performance was encouraging and we can build on that. We've got a lot of players coming back from injury so hopefully it's onwards and upwards from here."

The results mean Liverpool will drop down into the Europa League - a competition the Reds last won on a memorable night in Dortmund in 2001.

Asked if the players would find it difficult to pick themselves up to play in the tournament, Gerrard replied: "Of course because the main prize has gone.
