Despite winning the triplete, Barcelona fall behind Manchester United as top earners from the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils, who came second place to the Catalans raked in more money than another other club for their particiupation in Europe's most prestigious club competition.

All of last season’s Champions League participants received over £4.5 million for making it to the group stages of the competition. Each victory then earned clubs around £514,000 and £257,000 was dished out for every draw.

This makes sense, since United received the most TV rights last season being the defending champions and all, and well -- because they're Manchester United

Top 15 earners from UEFA Competitions – 2008-09
1. Manchester United – £38,281,000
2. Bayern Munich – £29,618,000
3. Barcelona – £26,544,000
4. Chelsea – £26,492,000
5. Werder Bremen – £25,143,000
6. Inter Milan – £24,240,000
7. Arsenal – £22,928,000
8. AS Roma – £22,328,000
9. PSV Eindhoven – £21,904,000
10. Lyon – £20,268,000
11. Liverpool - £19,866,000
12. Juventus – £18,950,000
13. Villarreal – £18,523,000
14. Real Madrid – £17,338,000

Our favourite German is talking again

Ballack: Germany Must Improve

"We have to singularly improve our level of play if we want to be a candidate at the World Cup," the Chelsea midfielder told German news agency SID.

He added: "First of all we have to qualify, but if we make it through Germany will be one of the favourites based on our commitment and our good organisation which compensate for certain weak spots - that's how we reached the final at EURO 2008.

"Looking ahead to the Russia game Ballack said: "We have to play at the same level as we did in the first leg (2-1 to Germany in October 2008) and for the moment we're far off that."

Metzelder being himself

Metze visits kids, looks classy while doing so.

Christoph Metzelder
used his year's summer vacation for a personal visit for all supported projects of his foundation. First stop was the youth center in Hamm Schulte Road, which is supported since February 2009 by Christoph Metzelder Foundation "Future Youth". On the second day of his tour-de-Ruhr, he returned to his old job - the station of Borussia Dortmund. Here he spent a morning with students of BVB - Learning Center, a project that is funded by the Foundation. The donbosco club in Essen is the oldest and largest production project of the Foundation. Here, too, Christopher spent several hours with the children and adolescents that are cared for every day here.

ETA: Interview with Usain Bolt at the Bernabeu here.

Highlights:

Is Manchester United also one of your favourite teams?
I've always liked Real Madrid, but Ruud van Nistelrooy has always been one of my favourite players and I followed him when he played for ManU. I support Real Madrid in La Liga and Manchester United in the Premiership.

How was it to have dinner with Cristiano Ronaldo?
I thank him for inviting me. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed my time with him and his family. Spanish food is fantastic. Roasted suckling pig is my favourite meal.

How many penalties could you score against Casillas out of five tries?
Probably three, but I am a better at defending.
ARBELOA/ALBIOL

Finally an answer to a very important question

¿Por qué te has dejado barba?

Pues por nada en especial. Me la comencé a dejar y bueno, aquí está. Hay gente a la que no le gusta y otra a la que sí, ya sabes. A mi madre le gusta y por eso la sigo llevando.

PHIL BALL.

Nothing succeeds like excess
By Phil Ball

"As Oscar Wilde sort of said, it doesn't matter what they're saying about you, just as long as they're talking about you. He also quipped that nothing succeeds like excess, and there you have the Spanish summer, soaked in sun and spending."
