"Rafa Benitez is hopeful of having centre-back pair Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel fit for the Barclays Premier League opener on Sunday - though Steven Gerrard faces a race against time to face Tottenham."

Carragher limped off following a knock to the ankle during Liverpool's last pre-season friendly with Atletico Madrid, while Skrtel has been suffering from a hamstring injury.

News of their improvement comes as a major boost to Benitez, who is likely to be without the injured
Daniel Agger this weekend.

The boss told his pre-match press conference: "Skrtel trained yesterday and hopefully he'll be fit. Carragher has been working with the physios today and we think he'll be available. Agger is also working with the physios but it will be more difficult for him."

Gerrard pulled out of England's friendly international with Holland this week due to a tight groin.

Benitez added: "I am really pleased because Mr Capello wanted to protect players. Because Gerrard had a problem they did a scan and pulled him out of the squad. We don't know if he'll be fit. He was working with the physios yesterday and today.

"If the game would have been on Saturday it would be difficult but because it's on Sunday he could have a chance."

Will we not even get a chance to see any Gernando action on Sunday? *flails* At least there's a chance he might be fit. Good news about Squirtle and Carra though!
ps. My first post? Hope I didn't screw anything up!

RGS: Reverse Gerrard Syndrome

This certainly is the case for a little guy named Leo Messi

Messi is hoping to miss Barcelona's opener against Sporting Gijon so he can train with Argentina for their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Brazil.

"I'll play until the 28th and later I want to ask the coach if I can have permission to go, and miss the first game so I can prepare for the match against Brazil,'' Messi said on arrival at Barcelona airport from Moscow.

Barcelona's first league match is on Aug. 31, while Argentina face a crucial World Cup qualifying clash against South American group leader Brazil on September 5.

This will probably mostly just interest those of you in the states...

So this launched yesterday, but I kinda forgot about it because of the game.

Go USA Bid is a website set up by the bid committee for the United States' bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. It just launched yesterday, but it's got some pretty cool stuff on it.

Including this video!

And there's also a petition that you can sign to show your support for a US-hosted World Cup- if you sign, they'll send you a free bumper sticker! I've already signed so I'm just waiting for my sticker! :D

Tottenham Hotspur Midfielder David Bentley Charged With Drink Driving

Following a car accident, Bentley has been released on bail...
13 Aug 2009 14:55:07

Tottenham Hotspur's David Bentley insists he's had "a wake-up call" after being involved in a car accident last night whilst driving under the influence of alcohol.

The reported Aston Villa target has been released on bail until August 28.

Reports indicate that he crashed his Porsche into a lamp post at around 03:00 BST after losing control in a country lane in Northaw, Herts. Police then took him into custody.

Speaking to Spurs' official website, he's moved to issue a statement in the aftermath of the incident.

"I should like to apologise to my club and the supporters for my actions, which led to my car accident last night and my subsequent charge," the 24-year-old states.

"I fully appreciate that as a professional footballer I have a duty to behave in a reputable and responsible manner. I am thankful that nobody was injured in the accident."

Baby Jon - a future football player?

According to Daddy Xabi, Jon likes to kick a ball. Oh, How cute! I would pay to see little Jon kicking, chasing after balls.
