Manchester United Defender Rio Ferdinand Talks Up Jonny Evans' Improvement

Manchester United's roaming defender Rio Ferdinand has lauded the ability of the club's blossoming young centre-half Jonny Evans, who showed signs of emerging excellence last season.

Evans came close to securing a second loan spell away from Old Trafford last season, but after some assurances from Sir Alex Ferguson that he would receive added playing time, together with some friendly advice from England international Ferdinand, Evans decided to remain with the Red Devils side.
Ferdinand explained to Evans that he could choose to sign for a side battling for a mid-table position, or he could elect to stay at the Theatre of Dreams and play a squad's role in a team capable of winning the European Cup.As it happened, Evans was witness to a number of appearances in United's iconic red-and-black kit, and was a fundamental part of the defence that stormed to a domestic record-making 22+ hours without a solitary concession at the turn of the year.

The Good: This might seem really weird but loyalty still exists in football

Totti agrees new five-year Roma deal

Francesco Totti has agreed a new five-year deal with AS Roma, the 32-year-old former Italy forward said on Monday.

Totti, a born-and-bred Roman, has only played professionally for the club he supported as a child and is adored in the Italian capital. He helped Roma win the Serie A title in 2001 and was part of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning team. Read more @ FourFourTwo

Mourinho interested in succeeding Sir Alex

forever chelsea~

Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho says he would like to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United when the Scot eventually retires.

The 67-year-old, who has been in charge at the Theatre of Dreams for a staggering 23 years, has revealed he may finally step down in the next two years, with the Red Devils supremo keen on securing a record 19th English league title for the club, as well as winning another Champions League crown.

And Mourinho, won won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup during his relatively short Stamford Bridge tenure, has admitted the Old Trafford hot-seat would appeal to him.

"I would consider going to Manchester United but United have to consider if they want me to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson," he said in the Daily Mirror.

"If they do, then of course.

"I like England, where the fans are very passionate and make the game a beautiful occasion with such an incredible atmosphere."

You're all probably sick of this swap deal. So am I actually, so this will probably be the last post about it ;)

Eto'o's's's Inter Presentation

"I thank Barcelona and my former team-mates. I spent wonderful years with that shirt. Many thanks to the club, the team-mates and the fans.

I want to write Inter Milan history. I won almost everything with Barca and I hope to do the same here. The Golden Boot? It would be nice but I think in the first place about the interests of the team.

Ibrahimovic has kissed the shirt of Barça? That's his choice. I won't do that for now because I first want to earn the trust of the fans on the pitch. Ibrahimovic is a great player but I am Samuel Eto'o and my past and my victories speak for me. I do not like comparisons. I wish Zlatan all the best.

Unstoppable England reign supreme
With four wins and a draw in five matches and a goals column of 12 for, 0 against, England swept all before them and ran out worthy winners of the UEFA U-19 Women's European Championship in Belarus. Two goals in the space of four minutes midway through the first half from Toni Duggan and Jordan Nobbs was enough to see off Sweden in the final and secure the country's first ever title for a women's youth team.

ESPN to show MLS, European soccer in Britain

ESPN has bought the rights to broadcast Major League Soccer live in Britain and Ireland as well as games from some European leagues.

The Disney-owned network is building up its live soccer content in Britain after already securing rights to show some Premier League matches.

The first live MLS match will be on Aug. 8 when England midfielder David Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy plays New England.

ESPN also announced Tuesday it has won the rights to show German, Portuguese, Russian and Dutch league soccer. ESPN has been picking up rights previously held by Setanta after the network collapsed in Britain due to financial problems.

Next season, ESPN will show 46 live top-flight English matches in Britain and 30 Scottish fixtures.

a) I'd like to first point out that this is ONLY in Britain and Ireland, ESPN in the US will NOT be getting Premier League games or German/Portuguese/Russian/Dutch league games.

b) I'm assuming they'll be showing games that are on at times when people might actually be awake to watch them. The Gals-Revs game they're starting off with will be kicking off at 11PM GMT, which I guess is reasonable (I've stayed up for 11PM games) but if they chose games later than that, there won't really be that much of an audience. :\

c) It's great that the league is expanding to be shown in Europe (people might start to take the league seriously if they actually watched a game), and I know this doesn't really affect US programming in any way, but I'd rather the league focused on expanding coverage in the US.
