An excerpt from Grant Wahl's book, The Beckham Experiment

How Beckham Blew It
("How Beckham's Entourage Blew It and How He Helped Along the Way" would be more apt, though less catchy!)

I'm not C&Ping it because it's long, but Grant Wahl is one of, if not the, best American sportswriter(s) covering soccer. Some of this stuff was known before, but I thought it was pretty ~juicy~.

New Everton kit proves to be a smash hit

The brand new retro strip, based on the shirts worn by the most successful team in the club's history in the mid-80s, smashed all retail records at Goodison on its first day on sale.

“We were up almost 200 per cent up on first day sales of any previous new kits,” said Ray Evans, MD of manufacturers Kitbag.

“We had a steady queue of people stretching 200 to 300 yards for over five hours on Saturday and we broke all records for Everton retail.

“The figures are incredibly rewarding for everybody involved both at Kitbag and at Everton FC.”

Toure to Citeh

Man City close to buying an Arsenal

Manchester City are close to agreeing a fee in the region of £16million for Arsenal defender Kolo Toure.

Sky Sports News report that Toure is returning to undergo a medical at Eastlands after the two clubs agreed a fee of £16m. It's thought that Toure may be unveiled as a City player by Friday.

Wenger has insisted however that a deal for Toure, who played for Arsenal last night in a pre-season friendly in Hungary, is not definite.

Wenger told Arsenal TV: "We will see what's happening in the next 24 hours, nothing is decided yet.

"We have seven centre-backs and I am in the position where I have to play some in midfield but of course Kolo is a very good player and we will see what will happen in the next 24 hours."

City's spending could see them in direct competition with Arsenal for a Champions League place next season.

Wenger added: "I am more focused on getting everybody fit for the start of the season but we are looking at opportunities as well, there are still some pre-season games to see what we really need.

"When the time comes we will do something."

He's gone :(

United sign Valencia

Manchester United is delighted to announce it has completed the signing of Antonio Valencia from Wigan Athletic on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old Ecuador international has played 34 times for his country, scoring four goals.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan. I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team.”

Antonio Valencia said: “Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me. I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honours in club football here.

“Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to get started.”

Antonio, I am not your biggest fan, but welcome to United. :D

And I have no idea why there's a huge gap at the top, I'm working on it.
