soccer players in new yorrrk

Did any of you NY chicas go on Wednesday? Have any pics/stories/used tissues you wanna share? Or were you too distracted by the Spain USA match on your TV screen? Either way, our BFFs Kickette and Unprofessional Foul were there and gave their readers the lowdownn!

From their coverage, we've learned that Mutu is a bit of a dick, and that Babel is always ready to break down in a beat. And when Flamini doesn't know how to answer a question he breaks out the French (see UF's vid below). Smooooooth

"do you ever go to unprofessionalfoul.com???"

Line ups:

Team Nash (white): Steve, Martin Nash, Thierry Henry, Mathieu Flamini, Ryan Babel, Edgar Davids, Grant Hill and Francesco Santoro in goal

Team Reyna (blue): Claudio, J. Zanetti, R. Cordoba, Adrian Mutu, Salomon Kalou, Chris Bosh, Tony Parker, Marc Stein, and Mike Quarino in goal

Don Andres Post

Iniesta was on Spanish late night talk show Buenafuente last night.
And all I got was stupid Bruno looking like an idiot on Conan >:|

In part 1 he talks about how he's always happy to set up goals. Never Forget this ~*~

A few hours after Iniesta’s goal against Chelsea, his dad called El Larguero (a show on Cadena Ser). The host asked him if he had known that his son was capable of scoring such beautiful goals. His dad told this story:

It was after a Liga game and Iniesta had a clear shot on goal but passed the ball to Eto’o, who then scored. His dad asked- “Andres, why didn’t you take the shot?” he replied very shyly, “Well… um… it’s just that, Samuel is going after the Pichichi.”

After another game where the same thing happened (Andres passed the ball to Messi, who scored), he asked- “Andres, why didn’t you take the shot? you could have made that.” and he replied, “I know but… well… Leo hasn’t scored in a few games. He needed it more.”

Parts 2 and 3 under the cut. It's in Spanish but Goal.com has a pretty good summary

is it just his timid nature, or did they make him feel extremely uncomfortable in this?

Gay referee gets red card in Turkey

Turkey's football authorities were at the centre of a growing scandal this week after a referee they had sacked for homosexuality and outed to the press began fighting back in the courts and the press.

"They thought I was an ant that they could crush, they thought I would run away and hide in a corner," Halil Ibrahim Dincdag said. "But they have destroyed my life and I will fight them to the end."

Leverkusen midfielder Schneider forced to retire.

Bernd Schneider has announced his retirement from football.

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder missed almost all of last season after slipping his disc a month before Euro 2008, for which he was expected to be part of the Germany squad.

The injury has not fully healed, according to recent tests, and the 35-year-old has decided to bring an end to a career which has spanned 296 Bundesliga matches, 124 in the second division, and 81 caps for the Germany national team

''Doctors told me a week ago that the risk of playing professional football was too great,'' he told the German Football Association's website.

''Tests showed that the accident I had two months before Euro 2008 has led to a back injury which makes continuing my career impossible.''

It official: Ronaldo's deal "done and dusted"

Cristiano Ronaldo's departure is all but done and dusted after Real Madrid and Manchester United finalised the agreement for his transfer on Friday evening.

The Portuguese winger was the subject of a world record £80million offer from the Spanish club on Thursday 10 June. He has since been on holiday but a return to work with new employers now beckons, with the sale set to be completed on Wednesday 1 July.

United have made no further comment, other than to confirm the finalisation.

Liverpool looking for a new shirt sponsor?

How many of you still think of beer when you see the Carlsberg logo? Personally, nothing but my beloved Liverpool comes to mind -- plus Carlsberg tastes like shit anyway, I'd rather associate the logo with nice things :) The Danish brewery have had a long standing 17 year deal with the club, but Liverpool's current financial situation could push the American owners to start hunting for a more profitable sponsor.

As of now, Liverpool get around £10 million a year, which is nothing compared to their rivals get. Man United will recieve £80m per season with Aon, while Chelsea make £50m with Samsung.

However, Liverpool are not able to consider new options until July due to an agreement made with Carlsberg.

Have any logos you'd like to see on the shirt? For a lot of us, the top choice will probably be Carlsberg but that doesn't mean we can't photoshop the possibilities

Let's start with a blank canvas ;)

we're taking a break

There is no Friday Night Smackdown this week.
I originally listed a lot but they don't matter.

On that note here's a Smackdown:

Poll #1421642 FOOD FOOD FOOD

Cesc's donuts/doughnuts
Fot Fronk's pies
oh god, I'm hungry
I miss Smackdown.

There is no need for the tie option, it's either one or the other.

pointless post is pointless.

Park Ji-sung said Monday he would quit the national team after the Asian Cup in 2011. / Yonhap
Park Ji-sung to Quit National Team in 2011

Park Ji-sung has made another bombshell headline by announcing he would play for the national team until the Asian Cup in 2011.

``As I have reached the World Cup semifinals, I am covetous of the Asian Cup title,'' the national team skipper told reporters at the National Football Center (NFC) in Paju, Gyeonggi Province on Monday.

``As for quitting the national team, the 2011 Asian football tournament will be my last international competition,'' he said. ``I really want to win the championship.''

The 28-year-old said Sunday that the 2010 World Cup in South Africa would be his final tournament.

Park was first capped in 2000 and played at the quadrennial event held in Lebanon the same year.

The Korean side, also headed by Huh Jung-moo, reached the semifinals, but settled for third place after losing to Saudi Arabia.

The Manchester United winger participated in the 2004 competition in China, where Korea was eliminated in the quarterfinals, but was not able to play in 2007 due to injury.

On his decision not to play at the 2014 World Cup, he said, "I think my stamina will not be as good in 2014. So, I need to play up to what I can offer for the team in the upcoming contest.''

He participated in the last two competitions in 2002 and 2006, scoring once in each.

Benitez admits Reds overpaid for Johnson
By Ian Herbert

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, admitted yesterday he had paid over the odds in the £17m deal for full-back Glen Johnson but insisted new Champions League rules, which state sides must have eight home-grown players in their squads for all games, had forced his hand.

There is a view at Anfield that Benitez was also keen to sign Johnson from Portsmouth in order to register an early statement in the transfer market and avoid last summer's frustrating pursuit of Gareth Barry. Hence the decision also to make Johnson one of the best paid players behind Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, on a salary estimated to be around £80,000 a week.
