Man Utd accept £80m Ronaldo bid

Cristiano Ronaldo in action for Manchester United
Ronaldo was heavily linked with a Real Madrid last summer

Manchester United have accepted a world record offer of £80m from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo.

"United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player," said a statement from the English club.

It added that the decision came at Ronaldo's request after he "again expressed his desire to leave".

United described the offer for the 24-year-old forward as unconditional and added that they expected the matter to be concluded by 30 June.

Madrid signed Brazilian Kaka for a reported £56m earlier in the week, surpassing the previous world record fee of £45.6m Real paid for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.

That deal was sealed by the ambition of returning Real president Florentino Perez, who previously led the Spanish club from 2000 to 2006 - during the famous galacticos era.

And Perez had earlier made it clear that he would do "everything possible" to sign Ronaldo.

Madrid have also been linked with Liverpool's Xabi Alonso, Valencia's David Villa and Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery since Perez's unopposed election signalled the return of their vast spending.

Ronaldo, who joined United in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon for £12.2m, was strongly linked with a move to the Spanish capital last summer.

United lodged a complaint to world governing body Fifa last June over what they believed was a deliberate attempt by Real to unsettle the winger.

After a long drawn out saga the Portugal international remained at United for the 2008-09 season, but the speculation soured relations between the clubs.

And last December United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that he would not "sell that mob a virus".

More to follow.

ESPN: The Magazine - The Naked Issue

NEW YORK — Some prominent female and male athletes will drop their uniforms for ESPN The Magazine's first "Body Issue," slated to hit newsstands Oct. 19, editor in chief Gary Belsky says.
The magazine is approaching pro, amateur and Olympic athletes about posing au naturel, albeit artfully covered or positioned. Their response has been enthusiastic, he says, though he declines to identify who has been approached. He adds the question is whether he can pull off the risqué issue without coming off as a "laddie" magazine. Or offending ESPN's corporate masters at The Walt Disney Co.

"We're toying with the idea of making it a no-clothes issue," Belsky says from his office in Manhattan. But first, he says, he and his staff will have to figure out how to "use equipment and pads and bats and goalposts and soccer nets and pucks and helmets to obscure body parts that we still can't quite go to in a magazine that's part of a company owned by (Disney)."

As part of the issue, the magazine is asking athletes to help rank the "Best Bodies" in sports. "If you ask athletes who has the best bodies in basketball, they'll have opinions," Belsky says. Besides sports' hottest bodies, the issue will explore the past, present and future of the athletic form. And the outer limits of how it can be "bent and pulled, tortured and broken, inflated and improved and made to excel," Belsky says.

David Villa in advanced talks with RM.

Valencia have turned down a reported offer from Chelsea for David Villa, with the Spain international seemingly set to join Real Madrid instead.

Chelsea's Spanish scout, Juan Cruz Sol, met with Los Che president Manuel Llorente on Thursday in the club's headquarters to discuss the future of the 27-year-old striker.

Cruz Sol spoke to the Spanish media after the meeting, with Valencian newspaper Levante quoting him as saying: "Chelsea made an important offer for him (Villa). But the answer (from Valencia) was 'no' because negotiations with Real Madrid are very advanced."

He added: "Hence, there's no possibility that Villa will go to Chelsea because he wants to go to Real Madrid.

"The purpose of the meeting was to have some contact and know with certainty what Villa's situation is. Now we have clear ideas and we know that to expect."

Valencia president Manuel Llorente revealed an offer for Villa had been received but refused to confirm whether it was from Chelsea. He told regional newspaper Las Provincias: "Yes, we have an offer for Villa but not from Spain."

Speculation has been rife Valencia could be forced to sell prize assets Villa and David Silva to ease their financial worries.

Madrid splashed out £59million on Kaka on Monday and then had a world-record £80million bid accepted by Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo on Thursday morning.

And it seems their summer spending, as new president Florentino Perez looks to re-establish his 'galacticos' policy, may not end there.

On whether he had spoken to Perez regarding Villa, Llorente added: "We had another conversation on Tuesday and we have started talking about the matter."

"It’s June 11th 2009 and on June 11th, 2010, the World Cup will kick off in South Africa. Thus the South Africans decided to throw a little soiree for the one year countdown at Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town. South African prez Jacob Zuma was there, along with various dignitaries and people who either put up the money for the tournament or stand to make money from the tournament. Or both. And somehow, things are looking up, with stadiums appearing capable of completion within the year."

EXCLUSIVE: £100m to burn - Fergie delight at Ronaldo sale as United chase Ribery and Benzema

Sir Alex Ferguson has been handed a £100million transfer fund by Manchester United after he personally gave the order for Cristiano Ronaldo to be sold to Real Madrid.

And United last night prepared to enter a bidding war with Chelsea for France international Franck Ribery which could go as high as £65m.

Old Trafford boss Ferguson is also known to have Lyon’s £25m forward Karim Benzema on his hit list and he hopes to conclude the £16m signing of Wigan’s Antonio Valencia in the near future.

Cannabis use a problem among Fiji's elite footballers

MARIJUANA use by Fiji's elite footballers is rife, say eight of the 10 presidents of soccer's premier districts playing in the Vodafone FACT which starts today.

They all agreed the only way to combat soccer's dark cloud was to have random tests, regardless of the cost.

At a minimum $600 a test, most districts' presidents believe any player failing a drugs test should be named and shamed.

That, they say, is the only way to kill off a habit that is dragging local development of the game.

Fiji soccer was once king of the South Pacific but is only a shadow of that now.

While many people put the blame on the lack of progress internationally on foreign coaches like the recently sacked Juan Carlos Buzzetti, others say marijuana is to blame.

With rugby and netball able to be competitive on the world stage, they questioned what the Fiji Football Association has done to fight a problem that has permeated the sport for over three decades.

In that time, smoking marijuana has become "acceptable" among top players.

Many do so in the stoned belief that it makes them better players.

Now the presidents of soccer's elite associations are united in their belief that every premier player should be randomly tested once a year.

Even more forthrightly, speaking off-the-record, one district official of a team playing this weekend admitted they supplied marijuana to premier players who wanted it.

He said it was to keep players happy because the team and its fans were reaping outstanding results. He said results counted not only in adding to the trophy cabinet and boasting rights but in finding sponsors for the team.

The official said it far better than having players going on drinking binges with officials and fans.

One district official this week admitted being a user himself.

But neither he and nor any other district president was willing to publicly speak about the grip marijuana has on the minds of soccer players across the country. Many of them privately said they were worried about the repercussions from the Fiji FA of speaking out.

Carlos Tevez Agrees To Manchester City Deal - Report

A British radio station has stated that Carlos Tevez has signed a deal with Manchester City...

It has been suggested over the past few days that it has been a two horse race between Manchester United and City to secure the services of the pint-sized striker for next season, with Liverpool being ruled out for financial reasons, and other big clubs seeming to fall by the wayside as the scenario draws to an end.

The rights to Tevez are owned by Kia Joorabchian, a British-born, Iranian businessman who has been negotiating with both Manchester-based clubs to decide the future of the Argentina international.

Tevez himself has reportedly been slightly unhappy at missing out on some big games at Old Trafford due to Alex Ferguson's rotational policies, so a deal with City would no doubt guarantee more first-team action and an increased wage packet, but no European football - something that Tevez has been afforded during his last two years with the Red Devils.

United have shown reluctance over the past weeks in paying the second part of the money they would have to part with in order to make Tevez's move a permanent fixture, even enlisting the help of attorneys in an attempt to find loopholes in the contract that would allow Sir Alex Ferguson's side to acquire the forward for free.

However, the whole affair now seems to be coming to an end, with the player himself said to make a decision on his future that will either refute or affirm the claims made by the British media after his involvement on Wednesday when Argentina take on Ecuador.
