May 23rd, 2009

Here are some dates and a BUNDESLIGA DISCUSSION POST.

On this day in history:

In the year 1430, Hundred Years' War: Joan of Arc was captured at the Siege of Compiègne.
In the year 1498. Girolamo Savonarola of Florence was executed for heresy, uttering prophecies, sedition, and other crimes.
In the year of 1730, War of the Spanish Succession: Led by the Duke of Marlborough, the allied forces of England, the Dutch Republic, and Denmark defeated the Franco-Bavarian army in Ramillies, present-day Belgium.

In the year 2009, one team was crowned Bundesliga Champions.

Will VfL Wolfsburg falter against Werder Bremen who just exited the UEFA Cup? Will the winner of the Bayern Munich v. VfB Stuttgart match win it all-- who are both only two points behind the leader, VfL Wolfsburg?

DISCUSSION POST
ALL MATCHES BEGIN AT 9:30 AM EST.

Bayern Munich v. VfB Stuttgart

It's finally trophy day for FC Barcelona but the biggest match in Spain today will be at the Estadio el Madrigal where Villarreal and Valencia are playing each other for a spot in Europe. Atletico Madrid currently have a secure place in the Champions League and will be facing Copa del Rey runner ups Athletic Bilbao. It's their spot to lose, can they hold on to it for a second year?

Gerrard leads tributes to Hyypia

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has led the tributes to defender Sami Hyypia, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

Hyypia, 35, will join German side Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer in the summer after a decade at Anfield.

"It's difficult to put into words how we feel about Sami. He's been fantastic for us, a colossus," said Gerrard.

"He certainly deserves legendary status and he is definitely one of the best players I have ever played alongside."Hyypia, who joined Liverpool from Dutch side Willem II in 1999 for £2.5m, is expected to make his 464th appearance for Liverpool in their final game of the season, at home to Tottenham on Sunday.

Chelsea lodge Assmann interest

Chelsea have made contact with Independiente over Fabian Assmann, skysports.com understands.

The highly-rated 23-year-old is being tracked by a host of clubs, with interest from England very strong.

Arsenal, Everton, Wolves and Birmingham are amongst the clubs linked with Assman, who could reportedly move on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

But it is Chelsea who are seemingly leading the chase after they made contact with Assmann's club Independiente.

Chelsea are looking for a new number two to provide back-up for Petr Cech and Middlesbrough's Ross Turnbull is known to be high on their wanted list.

However, Assmann is another potential recruit and his British-based representative Barry McIntosh has confirmed their interest.

"We have been made aware that Chelsea have gone to the club and made contact," McIntosh told skysports.com.

"However, there are a number of clubs looking at him and it is too early to say where it is happening."

McIntosh intimated that Assmann would prefer a move to a club where he would command the number one jersey.

"Assman will be playing for Argentina very soon, and with a World Cup coming up he has a very good chance of making the squad," he continued.

"So for him to go somewhere as number two, we are not sure if that is going to be the best option - if somebody else was to offer first-team football then we would have to look very closely at that."

¡Campeones, campeones!

Barca won the league, blah blah blah, but you already knew that. They were finally rewarded with the trophy today even though they lost their match against Osasuna. The trophy ceremony was a bit anti-climatic after a dull match, but the loss was soon forgotten about after the senior squad filled the pitch and the team and supporters were finally able to celebrate their season at the Camp Nou.
