Naples city council welcomes Balotelli

NAPLES - In a gesture of friendship and hospitality, the city of Naples presented Mario Balotelli with a special welcome plaque at Inter's hotel last night. The gesture was much appreciated by the player and Inter after what happened a week ago in the city of Turin.

Nicola Oddati, councillor for culture of the city of Naples, wanted to meet Balotelli and told him that the city is open to everybody. An inscription on the plaque reads 'With esteem, affection and friendship. To Mario Balotelli for a long and important career, also with the colours of Italy'.

"We wanted to give a small sign of solidarity to a coloured Italian boy who is a great promise for Italian football, and to say once again NO to racism, inside and outside stadiums," explained Oddati. "Naples is an open and supportive city, which will host the Universal Forum fo Cultures in 2013. It is, therefore, a city of peace, friendship, tolerance and interculture."

The Inter striker thanked the local authorities and said he is keen to visit Naples as a tourist in the future.

Absent stars devalue Germany's summer tour: Loew

BERLIN (AFP) — Germany coach Joachim Loew admitted Wednesday around a dozen stars - including captain Michael Ballack - are set to miss the national team's summer tour with a virtual B team likely to travel.

Germany fly to China on May 26 and face the national side in Shanghai on May 29 before travelling to face the United Arab Emirates in Dubai on June 2.

But Chelsea star Ballack is involved in the FA Cup final on May 30 and several other Germany stars are involved in either the German Cup final the same day or the European Under-21 Championships in Sweden from June 15-29.

"The European Under-21 Championships now takes a higher priority for us than the Asian tour with the national team," admitted Loew.

The likes of young stars like Schalke's Manuel Neuer, Moenchengladbach pair Marko Marin and Alexander Baumjohann, Hoffenheim's Andreas Beck and Stuttgart's Serdar Tasci and Sami Khedira - will all be preparing with Germany's juniors.

And with Leverkusen set to face Bremen in the German Cup final at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on May 30, Loew will be missing the eight current national squad members involved as both sides have four Germany squad members.

Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler, midfielder Simon Rolfes, plus strikers Patrick Helmes and Stefan Kiessling will be missing from Germany duty as will Bremen's goalkeeper Tim Wiese, defender Per Mertesacker, plus midfielders Torsten Frings and Clemens Fritz.

"From a sporting point of view, the timing of the tour of Asia is not ideal," said German Football Federation (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger.

But with Bayern Munich out of the German Cup, Loew can at least rely on stars such as Philipp Lahm, Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski or players from current Bundesliga leaders Wolfsburg.

And Loew says he will now use the tour to give players on the fringe of the national side an opportunity to impress.

"I will use the opportunity to see how several candidates, who we do not know so well, get on in the national team environment," said Loew.

This award now means nothing

Guess what? Ryan Giggs has just won PFA player of the year award. Yep, you read that correctly RYAN GIGGS.

You're laughing because you think i'm joking yeah? Nope, they ACTUALLY gave it to him.

The two letters F & A being the reason he won it, FA is now code for Manchester United.

IMO the award should have gone to Gerrard but i would have had no complaints if Vidic had won it, he has been immense this season. Giggs won it purely based on the fact he hasn't won it before in his highly successful career, this is play of the year, not "player who has been at the top level for a long time but hasn't won it yet".

Call me bitter if you want but even mancs will admit this is a joke. The award has just lost all of it's credibility in my and many peoples view.

Giggs shouldn't even have been nominated, there are plenty of players who have been unfairly ignored. Lampard and Alonso the two main examples. Fair enough Nando has been left out of the nominations despite having the best strike rate in the league as he didn't play enough games. Giggs has played even less than Torres.

What a shambles.

Young Player - Ashley Young

Stephen Ireland deserved it IMO

Team of the year -  Edwin van der Sar; Glen Johnson, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra; Ashley Young, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo; Nicolas Anelka, Fernando Torres
