Jamie Jackson investigates Premier League teams' huge squads

"Ideally, you would want 23 or 24 and then have academy players of a sufficient quality to back them up. If you have more than 25, it is difficult to have a meaningful training session." Mark Hughes, Manchester City manager

"It has become all about resources. Clubs can now buy so many players that 10 or 20 guys who could be top players elsewhere cannot play." Johan Cruyff

Those comments were made within the past fortnight on a topic that will be much debated over the coming weeks – squad sizes in professional football. Among others who have had their say is Uefa's general secretary, David Taylor, who calls the situation in English football "ridiculous". England's record cap-holder, Peter Shilton, is "flabbergasted". Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, accepts that the numbers at Premier League clubs are "very high". Craig Lindfield, a Liverpool forward on loan at Accrington Stanley, finds it "frustrating". His team-mate Jack Hobbs, loaned to Leicester, finds his predicament "demoralising" and feels "stale".

Baby joy for Wayne Rooney

Coleen Rooney, the wife of England striker Wayne, is three months' pregnant, according to reports.

Reports claim that Wayne and Coleen Rooney are expecting their first child | Photo: GETTY

Mrs Rooney, 22, and her husband, 23, who scored twice for England in a friendly against Slovakia last night, were said to be "absolutely thrilled".

"Coleen and Wayne couldn't be happier," a friend of the couple was quoted as saying last night.

"Their families are the biggest thing in their lives and Wayne has always said he wants at least three or four children. Coleen has always maintained she wants a family when the time is right.

"They don't know whether it is a boy or a girl; they don't mind either way."

The baby is expected in September, but so far the couple have only reportedly told relatives, close friends and senior officials at Manchester United.

Any new arrival would spark a bidding war for rights to publish the first pictures with some suggesting they could sell for as much as £1 million.

Mrs Rooney is the eldest of four children while Mr Rooney has two siblings.

A spokesman for the Rooneys refused to confirm or deny the reports, saying: "These pregnancy rumours have been too numerous to comment on and we gave up doing so a long time ago."

Thought it'd be nice to have a little break from all the training, injury, and picture posts :)

Chelsea Bid To Snatch Ashley "webcam" Young From Aston Villa - Report

Reports in the English press suggest that the Premier League challengers are looking to bring the winger to Stamford Bridge in the summer...

Chelsea are poised to make a bid for highly-rated Aston Villa winger Ashley Young when the transfer window re-opens in the summer, according to reports in the English tabloids.

The Daily Mail reports that the Stamford Bridge club are looking to off-load Florent Malouda, with Juventus interested in taking the Frenchman to Italy, and have earmarked the young England player as the ideal replacement.

Young moved to Aston Villa in 2007 from Watford for £10million, and has established himself as one of the key components in Martin O'Neill's sides' rise up the Premier League.

The 23-year-old has been left out of Fabio Capello's current England squad and, if Aston Villa's poor form continues and they miss out on finishing in the top four, it is understood that Young may wish to move on to put himself in the England manager's plans for 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

In addition, the London side are said to be keeping tabs on promising Manchester City forward Daniel Sturridge and could be ready to test boss Mark Hughes' resolve with a substantial bid.

The People report that Sturridge is seen as a future international at Eastlands and the club would not be willing to let the 19-year old leave cheaply.

With Manchester City likely to spend big on new additions in the summer, Sturridge's first team opportunities may become even more limited next season, and he too may want to move on to further his development.

However, it is not clear if Chelsea chairman Roman Abramovich will be willing to bankroll what would be two hugely expensive transfer deals.

Young has two football playing younger brothers. Lewis Young is a second year scholar, and Kyle Young trains at the Watford academy.Ashley is an Arsenal fan (Ian Wright was his favourite player) and his parents are Tottenham Hotspur supporters. His brothers are all Arsenal supporters, despite all playing for Watford.

Squirtle used tackle on Crouch - 40 HPS

Crouch gets kicked by Squirtle,

admits his frustrations with JT (you too?)

and is also retiring from doing "The Robot"

We have a love/hate relationship with international breaks. Many good things can come out of the 2 week league hiatus as we watch our favourite players represent their countries. They give us the excuse to swoon over players from rival clubs without feeling guilty, reunite former clubmates and usually end with a pitch full of steamy shirt-switches at the final whistle. On the other hand, they can also confuse our optical nerves with link play between Rooney and Gerrard and put the players on the risk of injury and exhaustion for their clubs. England certainly saw the worst part of the deal when a few players were seen limping off pitch during yesterday's friendly against Slovakia. One of these players included Peter Crouch, who did not find the match "friendly" at all.

-------------------- from --------------------

"I went up with Skrtel. I thought he was my mate to be honest, but obviously not," Crouch said. "I went up with him and he kicked out and gave me a dead leg."

Skrtel was being given a torrid time by Wayne Rooney, which may have contributed to the centre-back's frustration during the 4-0 defeat to Fabio Capello's men.

"It was a little bit (out of order)," Crouch added. "It's for other people to discuss if he didn't have the best of days."

Crouch would have been on the scoresheet against Slovakia if skipper John Terry had not tapped in when the ball was about to cross the line.

"I was looking to do that, come in and maybe score a goal if JT stayed out the way!" Crouch said.

"He apologised a few times. I would have done the same as well so I can't blame him."

If Crouch had scored there would have been no repeat of his famous robot celebration - a mark of the change in attitude under Capello.

"A few of the lads in the dressing room told me to do it but I don't think I can to be honest, it's a serious business now and I don't think it would go down too well with the manager," he said.

Cesc woah

Hat trick post. Tears in mai eyez.

The Voyeur is bringin' Cescy back!

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has started working with a football again and expects to return to first-team action in 'four weeks'.

Fabregas damaged medial knee ligaments last December and has since undergone rehabilitation, with the playmaker targeting the home meeting with Manchester City on 4th April as a "realistic" date to make his comeback.

News of the Spaniard's impending return will come as a major boost to the Gunners as they look to continue their charge for a UEFA Champions League berth, with the club currently three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
