XABI: REAL OFFER DIFFERENT CHALLENGE

The former Seville and Spurs manager has transformed Los Blancos since taking over in December, guiding them to nine successive wins - a sequence which has seen Real concede just two goals.

Alonso claims that while Wednesday's opponents still have plenty of attacking talent, they are now much tougher to break down.

He explained: "They are currently playing as a very compact unit. Of course, they have very good strikers like Raul, Robben and Higuain, but they have found a team that is very consistent with four defenders and two midfielders who are all very strong, and that is something that we will have to be aware of.

"I expect them to try and win the game and not concede, but we will
have a gameplan and will try to play intelligently. It's always key
to try and score in the away leg of a European tie, so that will be our idea."

Real's form has been rejuvenated since the arrival of Ramos but Alonso doesn't believe having a former Premier League coach at the helm will hand the Spanish giants an advantage.

He said: "I think these days everyone knows a lot of things about all
leagues. They will know us well in Spain because our matches are often broadcast live, but Rafa and the players know Real well too so there are no secrets."

The game will be the first time the two sides have met in the
competition since Alan Kennedy's winning goal in the 1981 European Cup final in Paris.

"I was born in '81 so obviously I don't remember much about that game," said the Spanish international.

"However, as you grow up, you learn more about the histories of
Liverpool, Real Madrid and the European Cup.

"From what I have been told, Real had a good team and it was a huge
disappointment for them to lose the final but Liverpool deserved to
win.

"It's quite unique that Liverpool have never played Real Madrid at any
time, apart from that game, so we are looking forward to facing them."

Over three thousand Reds fans are expected to make the journey for
Liverpool's first ever competitive fixture at the Bernabeu and Alonso
is hoping to give them a night to remember.

"I have been told that a lot of Liverpool fans are going to Madrid so
it will be special," added our number 14.

"It's a very nice city and they will have time to enjoy it during the day.

"The Bernabeu is a wonderful stadium and hopefully, with the way we
are going to play, the fans will enjoy the night too."

Darren Fletcher's family robbed at knifepoint at Manchester home

The family of Darren Fletcher, the Manchester United and Scotland footballer, were robbed at knifepoint at their home, police have revealed.

Hayley Grice, the footballer's fiancee, was grabbed by the hair and had a knife held to her throat while being forced to hand over her engagement ring.
Her mother, staying at the house while Fletcher was abroad with United, was also grabbed by one of the robbers and threatened at knifepoint to hand over more jewellery and watches.
The couple's young twin sons were also at home at the £1.5 million mansion in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, when the gang of three hooded robbers kicked open the front door and burst into the living room shortly before 9pm last night.
Earlier in day the £50,000-a-week Old Trafford midfielder flew out to Italy with team-mates for his club's crucial Champions League game against Inter Milan.
Fletcher, 25, who is also a Scotland international, is the latest in a long line of wealthy Premier League stars, mainly Liverpool players, who have been targeted by crime gangs while away from home for matches.
The robbers who targeted his house fled in a car but the victims did not see it being driven off.
Sergeant Phil Seeley, of Greater Manchester Police, appealed for information and said: "This was a terrifying attack for the victims who were at home."
Bowdon, on the border between Greater Manchester and Cheshire, is one of the area's most affluent villages and home to a number of multi-millionaire footballers.
Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard was also the victim of a raid, at his home on Merseyside.
His wife, model Alex Curran, was confronted by burglars while he was playing a Champions League match in December 2007.
Others from Liverpool FC who have been targeted include Dirk Kuyt, Pepe Reina, Jerzy Dudek, Daniel Agger, Peter Crouch and Florent Sinama-Pongolle.
Everton player Andy van der Meyde's property was also broken into.

WPS Fierce Kits are here

NEW YORK, NY (February 24, 2009) – Global sportlifestyle brand PUMA® and the stars of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), including three-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year, Marta, number one WPS draft pick and Olympic Gold Medalist, Amy Rodriguez, and US National Team midfielder and Women’s World Cup bronze medalist, Leslie Osborne, unveiled the home and away uniforms in New York today at a high-profile fashion presentation.

TV personality and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Summer Sanders hosted the event, while fashion designer and winner of TV’s Project Runway Season 4, Christian Siriano added to the excitement by designing his own fashion interpretation of a home and away uniforms inspired by the colors and materials from of the league’s uniforms.  The WPS uniforms will be put to the test in the WPS Inaugural Match on March 29th in Los Angeles, California when the Los Angeles Sol takes on the Washington Freedom.

The two design creations were showcased as part of the WPS Uniform unveiling, reinforcing PUMA’s fusion of both sport and lifestyle.  After the event, PUMA will work with WPS to highlight Siriano’s custom-designed outfits throughout the season and eventually auction his pieces later in the year, with proceeds going to a charity befitting of WPS, PUMA and Siriano.

“This is the first time I’ve ever designed for athletes – it’s perfect because I always design for strong women in my Ready to Wear collections and professional athletes definitely have to be tough in mind, body and spirit,” said fashion designer Christian Siriano.  “These soccer players are amazing and I love it!”

Gold Pride midfielder Christina DiMartino calls the new digs “fashion forward.” Her teammate Leslie Osborne agrees. Osborne isn’t sure if she will wear the skort all the time, but says it’s “a little extra.” Like jewelry to an outfit.

There is some opposition to the new uniforms. Asked whether she would be going skort or shorts come game day, Jersey Sky Blue forward Natasha Kai let it be known wear the new uniform ‘craze’ turns into just plain crazy. She took one look at the skort and with a slight sneer proclaimed “shorts!”

Boston Breaker Amy Rodriguez stated that she thinks “they add a little bit of flare.” PUMA did a really great job of designing these. I kind of like the skirt. I think it looks cute.”

Angela Hucles concurs. “The cute little skirt is growing on me. I think I’m going to do both.” Hucles wants to start her own trend – or at least slightly alter an old one. “I’m going to wear the skirt, and then I’m going to rip it off. From now on it’s the Angela Hucles. It’s no longer the Brandi Chastain.”

Players stated the option of going skort or shorts was their own game time decision.
