ESPN wants EPL!!!!

espn-logo ESPN Insider Confirms UK Premier League TV Bid

An insider source at ESPN has revealed that the Disney-owned company is planning on bidding for one to two of the six UK TV packages available for the 2010-2013 Premier League seasons, according to Bloomberg.

While the news hardly comes as a surprise to regular readers of EPL Talk, we at least now have confirmation that ESPN will battle against Setanta and Sky Sports to decide who’ll share the license rights. Once the final decision is made by the Premier League this summer, the international TV rights will be decided which will have a massive impact on nations worldwide, including the United States where massive changes are projected. Out goes Fox Soccer Channel. In comes ESPN for U.S. TV rights to our favorite league.

If ESPN does capture a portion of the TV rights deals in the United States and United Kingdom, the media company will need to create its own distinct soccer channels either by rebranding its networks in Europe and the United States, or creating brand new ones.

For better or worse, big changes are on the horizon for football fans in the United Kingdom and United States.

Reds' Agger set to join AC Milan - report

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is set for a move to AC Milan if reports in Denmark are to be believed.

The Danish international defender has failed to recover his first-team place after missing the entire 2007-8 season with a foot injury. Agger has been reportedly unhappy with the lack of opportunities and the lack of a new contract.

Despite injury to Martin Skrtel, Agger has made just nine appearances for Liverpool.

The Daily Mail reported on Thursday that his representative Per Steffensen met San Siro sporting director Ariedo Braida and Italian agent Rino Foschi for lunch in Milan this week.

Danish website Tipsbladet says that the Rossoneri wanted the defender, who starred for the Reds in their run to the 2007 Champions League Final they lost to Milan, as a replacement for Alessandro Nesta, on whom injuries have taken their toll.

Tipsbladet reports that a fee of 60 million kroner, around £7.5m, has been agreed.

This is not our year....

There's nothing official as of this moment but Marca published the news in a rather spectacular way so I'm guessing they at least have somehwat credible sources.

According to them, Ramón Calderón will leave tomorrow the presidency of Real Madrid after being subjected to pressure by the directive board. Vicente Boluda, the current vicepresident, will take his position until there's new elections.

Tickets selling at £785 for Real Madrid Liverpool clash

Real Madrid have put on sale their most expensive-ever tickets for Liverpool’s visit in the Champions League next month. Top seats at the Bernabeu on February 25 will cost £785 — and that’s before the touts get hold of them.

The VIP ticket comes with a complimentary team scarf as well as food and drink from one of the club’s restaurants, but it is still double the price of the same ticket for a match against Juventus last November. Collapse )

Man accused of sexually abusing Eto'o son acquitted

A friend of Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o was acquitted Thursday by a Spanish court of charges that he sexually abused the Cameroonian international's six-year-old son while acting as a babysitter.

The Barcelona court ruled that there was insufficient evidence that the man, described by prosecutors as a close friend of the player, "made any type of touching or other acts of a sexual nature" when he looked after the child. Collapse )

Ibisevic blow for Hoffenheim

Bundesliga leaders Hoffenheim will be without star striker Vedad Ibisevic for the rest of the season.

The Bosnia international, who has been in spectacular form for the Bundesliga surprise package this season, will be sidelined for six months after damaging cruciate ligaments in his right knee during a friendly with Hamburg on Wednesday.

Ibisevic flew back to Germany after the match from the club's winter training camp in Spain and an MRI scan has now confirmed that the Bundesliga's top-scorer will miss the rest of the campaign.

"His absence will be a huge weakness for us as we have lost one of our most important players," Hoffenheim general manager Jan Schindelmeiser commented.

Schindelmeiser and coach Ralf Rangnick will now be looking to find a replacement for Ibisevic, who has bagged 18 goals in just 17 league matches for Hoffenheim this season.
