Christiano Ronaldo crashed his car

Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo has been involved in a car crash.

The 23-year-old winger was driving his Ferrari through the tunnels beneath the runways at Manchester Airport when he crashed into a barrier.

The player was not injured in the collision, which happened on Wilmslow Road at about 1020 GMT.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said an investigation into the incident was under way.

The Portuguese international came on as a substitute for Manchester United in the 1-0 League Cup Semi Final defeat at Derby County on Wednesday evening.

michael ballack - pay as you play plan!

Ballack to sign new kind of Chelsea deal

Michael Ballack, who arrived at Stamford Bridge on a free transfer from Bavarian giants Bayern Munich two and a half years ago, will see his current Chelsea deal expire in the summer.

Rather than offload the injury-plagued German midfielder, The Times reports that the Blues will keep him, albeit on dramatically different contractual terms.

His current £121,000-per-week deal will be scrapped and replaced with a new 'pay as he plays' performance-related agreement. Although his basic salary will be lower, money-spinning bonuses will be dangled like carrots in front of his nose.

Ballack is said to be receptive to the proposals after initial talks and could put pen to paper before the end of January.

Chelsea are currently being crippled by ridiculous player wages and, should Ballack sign on, the new contract model could be the way forward for the Stamford Bridge men in a testing financial climate.

MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo escaped injury Thursday after crashing his sports car in a tunnel on the way to training.
The Portugal winger’s Ferrari collided with a roadside barrier in a two-lane tunnel near Manchester Airport, police said.
At the scene, the 23-year-old European player of the year gave a negative breath test to officers, who said there will be an investigation of the crash.
“He’s fine and is training as normal with the team this morning,” Manchester United said.
Photographs showed the front of the red car completely crushed after absorbing the impact of the crash. Metal debris, including the front left wheel, was scattered across the road.

No other vehicles were involved, although United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was traveling behind Ronaldo at the time.
On Wednesday night, Ronaldo came off the bench in a 1-0 loss at Derby County in the first leg of the League Cup semifinals.

The Lukas Podolski saga is about to reach its end, as Bayern Munich are hopeful they will thrash out terms with Cologne shortly.

Bayern supremo Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has expressed his optimism, as the Bundesliga champions and underdogs Cologne are in talks regarding a bid in the region of £9 million.

Podolski is desperate to end his disappointing adventure at Allianz Arena and to return to the club of his heart.

Manchester City were rumoured to be highly interested in securing the Germany international’s services, but it appears Cologne are set to win the race for 'Poldi'.

Rummenigge told Bild: “Cologne made an improved bid and negotiations are going the right way.

“The difference between the £10 million we are asking for and what they are offering is not very important.

“I expect us to reach an agreement pretty soon.”
