Ferdinand to captain England as injury gets the better of Terry

no word yet on how stevie g will feel about this.

[ i hope black_silver doesn't mind i stole her photo ;) ]

Rio Ferdinand will captain England against Kazakhstan after John Terry was ruled out of tomorrow's World Cup qualifier with a back injury.

"We have plenty of players, we have the substitutes, I am sure the substitute of John Terry will play well," admitted the England coach Fabio Capello. When asked if Terry would be fit for the Belarus match on Wednesday, the Italian continued: "I don't know, it depends on his back, if he can train a bit the day after tomorrow. If not, it is not possible to play because there are other players, good substitutes for him." Matthew Upson, Wes Brown and Joleon Lescott are in contention to come in for Terry.

Wembley has not always been a happy home for England recently with the crowd voicing disapproval over what they have seen as substandard performances and Capello emphasised the need for patience. "I hope the crowd helps us," he added. "If it is not possible to score goals early, we need patience," he said. "I remember the old Wembley atmosphere, when the crowd helped the team. When we played here, after 20 minutes we could have problems, but I think that the next game the crowd will help us. I'm sure, 100%."

Tomorrow will be the first meeting between the two countries and Capello admitted he was unfamiliar with many of Kazakhstan's players. "I know only four players," Capello said. "They have moved players from the Under-21s and I have one video about these players. It's difficult, it's better when you know everything about your opponents."

who wants to start taking bets on how long it'll take them to get boo-ed? evil fans. :\

Because the list of the 30 finalists in contention for the Balon D'Or comes out in a couple of weeks (or something), there's been a lot of talk about who will be nominated. The top five candidates being talked about are:

~Cristiano Ronaldo
~Lionel Messi
~Iker Casillas
~Xavi Hernandez
~Fernando Torres.

But Nando has some words about the talks::Collapse )

who do you think should be on the list??

Fiorentina - AC Milan Charity Match

A bunch of football's greatest came back to the field to play a charity match for former Milan and Fiorentina player, Stefano Borgonovo who is suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Those who took part in the match include: Ronaldinho, Ruud Gullit, Roberto Donadoni, Franco Baresi, and Il Divin Codino himself, Roberto Baggio.

Lou Gehrig's disease has struck down over 50 professional and amateur Lega Calcio players and reports suggest this might be because of the type of fertilizers and pesticides used during the 80's and 90's.

Here's what the Guardian article says about this:

As research continues, the disease is cutting a swath through a generation of players, including the former Genoa captain Gianluca Signorini and former Como midfielder Adriano Lombardi, leaving tonight's players wondering if they are raising money to fight an illness that will one day take them. "We need to find out about this," said Celeste Pin, Borgonovo's former room-mate at Fiorentina. "It is striking down footballers, which does not leave you feeling very serene."

on Stefano Borgonovo:

Now paralysed and speaking with a computer-generated voice, Borgonovo is raising funds for research into the nerve-wasting condition known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or more commonly Lou Gehrig's disease after the US baseball player who died of it in 1941. "I want to find the penicillin of 2008," said Borgonovo, who scored the goal that put Milan into the 1990 European Cup final.

Forza Stefano!

[Note: I had no idea how to tag this... I also added a video but had to take it down because it would show the German NT practising instead of the video I originally placed. Videos are in most of the articles I placed and it's really very touching, especially when the players take turns giving Stefano a kiss on the forehead.]

Little late, but...

.... Spain NT arrived at Tallinn, Estonia yesterday evening. Btw, I`m from Estonia:) Everybody is sooo excited about this, because it`s very important for a small nation and it`s team to play with the European champions. Of course we are going to lose, beacuse we can`t play, but I believe, that the game is going to be interesting, at least for us, Estonians:)
Anyway, the Spaniards had some problems with their luggage at the airport, but they were all smiling and gave autographs. Here are some pictures:
