Van der Sar returns for injury hit Holland
|Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Saar has made a surprise return to the Holland squad.|
The 37-year-old called time on his international career after Euro 2008 having earned 128 caps, but left the door open for a possible return, saying he would play if coach Bert van Marwijk needed him.
Now with Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg injured, Van Marwijk has selected Van der Sar for both upcoming World Cup qualifiers, against Iceland on October 11 and Norway on October 15.
"This is great," Van Marwijk said as he revealed his squad in Zeist. "Edwin is someone from the another level, he is above all others. He will start both games.
"We deliberated with the technical staff on Wednesday and came to the conclusion we had to call Edwin.
"After that, Frank de Boer and I contacted Edwin and in the evening he called us back with the good news.
"It gave him something of a shock, yes. But he felt mostly flattered. He took some time to think about it and I am happy with his decision."
FC Utrecht keeper Michel Vorm has been named in the squad for the first time.
The 24-year-old has been named as reserve keeper Henk Timmer is carrying an injury.
Also back in the squad is Real Madrid's Wesley Sneijder, who makes his return after being kept out for two months with a knee injury despite not having played for his club side this season.
Goalkeepers: Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United), Henk Timmer (Feyenoord), Michel Vorm (Utrecht)

Forwards: Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Ajax Amsterdam), Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Arjen Robben (Real Madrid), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (Celtic), Ryan Babel (Liverpool).
Looks like Daniel Agger might be moving to Madrid.
Top of the List
Real vice-president Jose Angel Sanchez said in The Sun: “Agger’s a player we have been looking at for a long time and it’s likely we will bid for him in January.
“He’s a world-class player and would fit into our system without a doubt. We need a defender and a striker — and Agger tops our list.”
It turns out that Madrid had initially planned to purchase Agger during the summer, along with Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
I thought you guys would be all over this!

LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Cristiano Ronaldo is back in the Portugal squad after an injury layoff, and is set to play his first games under new coach Carlos Queiroz in this month's World Cup qualifiers.
The Manchester United winger was included in Portugal's 23-man squad Friday to play Sweden on Oct. 11 and Albania four days later.
Portugal beat Malta 4-0 in its opening qualifier but then was upset at home 3-2 by Denmark and is fourth in Group A.
Ronaldo hasn't featured since undergoing ankle surgery after the European Championship.
"It's great to be back in the national squad," Ronaldo said on the Portuguese Football Federation's Web site. "These are two important games we want to win. We have an excellent group of players and coaches and I'm very optimistic."
Inter Milan winger Ricardo Quaresma also returns after missing the first two qualifiers.
Queiroz, who took charge in July, also called up Deco even though the Chelsea playmaker is still recovering from a torn thigh muscle. Atletico Madrid's Maniche is also in doubt because of a back injury.
Winger Simao Sabrosa and central defender Ricardo Carvalho are both sidelined due to knee injuries. Sporting Lisbon's Tonel won his third call-up to provide cover for the central defense.
Portugal has beaten Sweden only three times in 13 encounters. It has won all three of its previous games against Albania.
Goalkeepers: Quim (Benfica), Eduardo (Braga), Daniel Fernandes (Bochum).
Defenders: Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea), Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea), Tonel (Sporting Lisbon), Pepe (Real Madrid), Bruno Alves (Porto), Fernando Meira (Galatasaray), Antunes (Lecce), Miguel (Valencia).
Midfielders: Deco (Chelsea), Raul Meireles (Porto), Carlos Martins (Benfica), Joao Moutinho (Sporting Lisbon), Maniche (Atletico Madrid), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Ricardo Quaresma (Inter Milan).
