David Beckham is to retire from football at the end of this season after an illustrious 20-year career.

The former England captain made 115 appearances for his country and 394 for Manchester United, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Beckham, 38, signed a five-month deal at Paris St-Germain in January.

"I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level," he said.

PSG have two more games before the end of the season, at home against Brest on Saturday and away to Lorient on 26 May

Roberto Mancini set to be sacked by Manchester City before summer tour

Roberto Mancini is set to be sacked as Manchester City manager with the Italian's tenure almost definitely ending before the club's summer tour to the United States.

With club pursuing Manuel Pellegrini, the Málaga coach, as his replacement Mancini cut a troubled figure following Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Then he railed at the club for not denying the stories regarding Pellegrini, an illustration of Mancini's brusque style that has not endeared him to City's players or some members of staff.

This and other factors have caused City's Abu Dhabi executive to lose confidence in Mancini, who was given a five-year contract last summer after leading the club to a first top-flight title in 44 years.

Mancini has struggled to build on that success, with his team exiting the Champions League in the group stages, losing their league title to their Manchester United and on Saturday losing to Wigan at Wembley.

"As we had said, in the past few days we analysed our sporting development and came to the conclusion that we wanted to venture a new beginning. We thank Thomas for everything he brought to Werder Bremen in more than 40 years of belonging to the club as a player and coach. The club celebrated excellent sporting success with him and he characterised Werder," said manager Thomas Eichin in the name of his management colleagues Klaus Filbry and Klaus-Dieter Fischer. "After battling to avoid relegation, we were of the collective opinion that a consensual separation was the best for the planned new start." A successor has not yet been named.

Schaaf bid adieu to Werder Bremen. "I had an extraordinary time here, connected with a lot of positive experiences and great successes. I would like to thank everyone who accompanied me along the way and supported me. I wish Werder Bremen a successful future," said Schaaf after 14 years as head coach.

Schaaf had been the longest current serving Bundesliga coach as the Mannheim native took office on 9 May 1999 and guided Werder to the league and cup double in 2004. Altogether, the coach won three German Cup crowns (1999, 2004 and 2009) and turned Werder into a regular in international competition. Under his leadership, the Green-Whites took part in Champions League seasons and played four seasons in the UEFA Cup/Europa League. In total, he coached Bremen's professionals in 644 competitive matches.

Schaaf looks back on an impressive career along the Weser. He has been an SV Werder member since 1972, rising through the club's youth system until reaching the Bundesliga. Already before retiring from the game, Schaaf took over coaching the Green-Whites' youth teams and coached Bremen's second team after he stopped playing and took over as professional coach in 1999.

*sniff* I'll miss him, but after the last 3 seasons I think it's for the best.

Aye, what a day. Winning at Villa - a team full of brutes, beasts and a Benteke - Chelsea proved once again that good triumphs over evil and that good guys wear black.

On a day when Ramires was bullied and brutalised, when Dave was Tab-Ramos'd, when the legend had to endure chants of 'Die Terry, die', Chelsea rose above it all and crafted a winner of such extraordinary beauty that even the orcs shamed their instincts and applauded. Humanity rose to the occasion.

Chelsea isn't the most likable Club. Who likes a winner? And in Frank Lampard there is much to despise... he is the middle class Londoner in a play that routinely casts working class lads, yeah. He has the genius IQ, the public school background and his road to heaven was paved with gold. (Football famous father, uncle and cousin). But he has also paved that road with goals, two hundred and three of them for Chelsea... and counting.

European Football - AIK goalkeeper Turina found dead

Players and officials at Swedish soccer club AIK were in shock following the sudden death of goalkeeper Ivan Turina on Thursday at the age of 32.

"It is with great sorrow and shock that we can confirm that goalkeeper Ivan Turina passed away on the night between Wednesday and Thursday," the club said in a statement.

"Ivan died suddenly in his sleep and at the moment no crime is suspected."

Croatian Turina, the father of one-year-old twins, was known to have a congenital heart problem which he told the club about when he signed for them in 2010.

"We knew that he had a congenital heart problem but he was completely healthy," AIK chairman Johan Segui told newspaper Expressen.

Striker Henok Goitom, who lived next door to Turina, said he had been summoned by the family. "His wife's mother rang hysterically on my doorbell," he told reporters at the team's Karlberg training ground.

"Yesterday was an ordinary day. Today, Ivan is dead," he said. "It's a shock. The AIK supporters loved him. It's a slap in the face for everyone but we are united as a group and we're trying to help everyone in AIK and his family."

Turina's wife is expecting the couple's third child.

Fans streamed to Karlberg to lay scarves and flowers at an impromptu shrine to the popular keeper, who had recently extended his contract with the club to 2016.

Flags at the training ground flew at half mast as red-eyed players and staff spoke quietly with the assembled media and supporters.

Turina played 89 competitive matches for the club, keeping 35 clean sheets, and he won a single cap for Croatia when he played against Hong Kong in 2006.

It was unclear whether AIK's next league game against IFK Gothenburg on Monday would go ahead as planned.

So it's official: Mario Götze will play für Bayern München next season
Borussia Dortmund confirmed the rumours, appearing in the BILD...

Me thinks it would have been nice, if Götze knew the song from Die Toten Hosen:

Luis Suarez Charged By The FA Over Bite

Liverpool's Luis Suarez has been charged with violent conduct by the FA after biting an opponent during a Premier League clash.

Television footage seen by millions of people showed the striker sinking his teeth into Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovich.

He apologised for what he called his "unacceptable behaviour" and has already been fined by his club.

However, he could now be banned for a number of matches if football's governing body rules the bite constitutes violent conduct.

A spokesman for the FA said: "It is our contention that the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient in these circumstances."

The incident, which happened during the 2-2 draw at Anfield, was "retrospectively reviewed" by the FA because it was missed by match officials.

Suarez has until 6pm tomorrow to respond to the charge, with an independent regulatory commission expected to meet on Wednesday to decide whether he should be punished.

Liverpool have only four games left this season and a match ban of the length sought by the FA would bring his season to a premature end.

The club has so far stood by Suarez, although managing director Ian Ayre has said the 26-year-old will need to work on his discipline.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers added: "His behaviour is unacceptable and I have made him aware of this."

Suarez has asked the club to donate his fine to the Hillsborough Family Support Group, which was set up in the wake of the 1989 disaster in which 96 people died.

The Uruguayan international will also be offered anger management counselling, the Professional Footballers' Association said.

Suarez has been charged with biting another player once before.

He served a seven-match ban in the Netherlands while at Ajax after biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal.

Liverpool have fined Luis Suarez for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic but insist the striker still has a future at the club.
Suarez, 26, bit Ivanovic's arm during his team's 2-2 draw against Chelsea .
Asked if the incident would affect the player's time at the club, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said: "Not at all.

"It affects his future in the sense that we have to work with him on his discipline."
The Football Association will review the match official's report into the game and incident before deciding what course of action to take.
However, Ayre said he has spoken to the club's owners concerning the controversy and added: "Luis is a very important player to the club.
"As we keep saying, he signed a new four-year contract last summer and we'd all love to see him here throughout that contract.
"He's a fantastic player, top scorer and everything we'd want in a striker, so there's no change there.
"This is more about getting him back on the right track and it's largely down to [Liverpool manager] Brendan [Rodgers] now to work with him on that side of his character."
Merseyside police say they will not take any action against Suarez, with Ivanovic not reporting any physical injury and telling officers he did not want to pursue the matter.
Suarez issued a swift apology following the conclusion of the game at Anfield on Sunday and also spoke to the Serbia international.
"I've spoken to Ivanovic on the phone so I could apologise directly to him," Suarez tweeted. "Thanks for accepting."
He also tweeted: "For my unacceptable behaviour the club has fined me.
"I have asked the club to donate the money to the Hillsborough Family Support Group for the inconvenience I have created to the Liverpool fans and to Ivanovic."
It is not the first time that the Reds forward has committed such an act. While playing for Ajax, he was banned for seven games after biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal during a match in November 2010.
He moved to Liverpool in January 2011 and was given eight-match suspension and fined £40,000 for racially abusing Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra in December 2011.
Following Suarez's latest misdemeanour in biting Ivanovic, he has been offered anger management therapy by the Professional Footballers' Association.
Its chief executive, Gordon Taylor, said: "We've got a lad here who is an extremely good player, one of the world's best and is letting himself, the club and the game down by his actions.
"While it's good he made a personal apology we have got to work really hard with him and I hope the club agree on this anger management business to avoid it happening again and setting the worst possible example."
Suarez has scored 30 goals so far this season and is one of the six contenders for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award.
Taylor added: "It would be embarrassing if he is named Player of the Year but we have got to deal with it and make sure he is player of the year not just in a footballing sense but as a human being as well and we will be trying to do that."
Meanwhile, Suarez's boot sponsor adidas issued a statement saying they did not condone Suarez's behaviour.
It added: "We will be reminding him of the standards we expect from our players. Luis has admitted his actions were unacceptable and we support the way Liverpool are planning to handle the situation."
