Jogi announcing 30 names
… for the preliminary World Cup squad … with some surprises!

Goal: Manuel Neuer (Bayern München), Roman Weidenfelder (Borussia Dortmund), Ron-Robert Zieler (Hannover 96)

Defense: Jerome Boateng, Philipp Lahm (Bayern München), Erik Durm, Kevin Großkreutz, Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund), Benedict Höwedes (Schalke 04), Marcell Jansen (HSV), Per Mertesacker (FC Arsenal), Shkodran Mustafi (Sampdoria Genua)

Midfield: Mario Goetze, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos (Bayern München, Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Lars Bender (Bayern Leverkusen), Leon Goretzka, Julian Draxler, Max Meyer (Schalke 04), Matthias Ginter (FC Freiburg), André Hahn (FC Augsburg), Sami Khedira (Real Madrid), Lukas Podolski, Mesut Özil (FC Arsenal), Andre Schürrle (FC Chelsea)

Offense: Miroslav Klose (Lazio Rom), Kevin Volland (1899 Hoffenheim).

That is … unexpected. Not that he doesn't take Gomez. I kind of expected that. But … Goretzka? Meyer? Ginter? Mustafi? And only Klose and Volland????

No Ter Stegen! Oh my.

I'd put Poldi in with the strikers.

But yes, the exclusion of Max Kruse is a surprise.</p>

Those kids will presumably be cut in a few weeks.

I hope he sticks to the basics this year. He never could decide which club he wanted us playing like...

connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 12:25 pm (UTC)
I would, too. But Jogi put him with the midfielders. *shrugs*
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 8th, 2014 12:35 pm (UTC)
He'll experiment for the first three or four games so the team is well prepared and cohesive when they get to Portugal, obviously.

the more i think about it the more negative i am of germany's chances
Jenny Jenkins: Melancholy 2jenny_jenkins on May 8th, 2014 01:41 pm (UTC)
I don't want him to experiment the way he did last time.

(At least Bayern's players will arrive on time this time - leaving them to dwell on the loss was probably a bad idea. They should have been with Germany 24 hours later and with their friends helping them forget the loss by focusing on the next task).

I want what he thinks his first 11 is (or some version VERY close to it) to play in the friendlies with instructions that if they feel unwell at any time, they are to ask to come off.

Too much experimentation killed us in 2012. I'll never forget that Italy line-up.
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 01:45 pm (UTC)
My idea on the first 11

Neuer, Lahm-Hummels-Boateng-Schmelzer, Schweinsteiger-Kroos (or Goetze)-Müller (or Draxler)-Reus-Özil (or Podolski), Goetze (on the wrong 9) or Klose
Laurenblackjedii on May 8th, 2014 01:55 pm (UTC)
Pee has to be in the CB. He has had an amazing year at Arsenal.

Not impressed with Hummels or Svhmelzer. Mostly because he has not played much with the NT and you cant experiment much with the back line
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 01:55 pm (UTC)
Hummels will play. Schmelzer I am not sure about. See my next comment!
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 9th, 2014 02:17 am (UTC)
The one thing with Hummels is that he's actually a decent-ish fit with Per. Per's rather slow but he's technical and has finesse. Mats is fast and powerful.

The problem is I don't know how much Hummels is willing to play with Lahm and Boaeng and Neuer, who are all pretty much guaranteed starters. I don't know if it's just a Bayern issue (which we know Hummels does have) or if it's that he's not used to playing with them but I am all for a cohesive together-back line.

I just... man I wish badstuber had matured the way he was heading. He was growing into CB fantastically.
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 9th, 2014 03:02 am (UTC)
Oh, Badstuber will come back. But he's been injured and was out almost 2 years … they are all happy he is back with the team (Bayern).
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 9th, 2014 03:05 am (UTC)
I know he will and I'm glad because that had to be incredibly brutal to b have your career almost permanently end

But just think how good he could have been had he been able to progress instead of coming back from that injury ;.; I don't think Stu Holden's recovered yet either come to think of it
Jenny Jenkins: Melancholy 2jenny_jenkins on May 10th, 2014 12:16 am (UTC)
Are we sure? Per has been the best CB in the Prem this year. And he's a better fit with Boateng than with Hummels.
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 10th, 2014 05:04 am (UTC)
We'll see I guess.
But if neither Hummels nor Schmelzer are in the starting line-up Dortmund will start yapping again. They always do. Especially their sports director, who just doesn't seem to be able to shut up.
Jenny Jenkinsjenny_jenkins on May 10th, 2014 05:11 am (UTC)
Per being in the Prem inures him from criticism from jealous Bundesliga clubs/hacks/former players.

Arsenal has no lobby (on the contrary, Wenger would be cheerful if none of his players were picked :p) and alternatively, no enemies in German football.
marsyke: pic#120993075marsyke on May 8th, 2014 06:06 pm (UTC)
Close to my idea. But I wouldn't mind Sami if he is fit. We could use some cover for our defense.
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 9th, 2014 01:52 pm (UTC)
If Jogi is willing to call him up even if he's that iffy... we desperately need him

(glad he called up Howedes though. Apparently Benni said he called to check in several times to see how he was feeling. I AM RELIEVED.)
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 01:47 pm (UTC)
Alternately I can also see Boateng replacing Schmelzer on the left (he used to play that position even though he never liked it) and Mertesacker with Hummels in the centre defense.
Laurenblackjedii on May 8th, 2014 01:52 pm (UTC)
Wtfffff was he doing putting Kroos in Mullers position who told him that was a good idea!
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 01:53 pm (UTC)
Well, seeing what Jogi is doing lately I don't feel very positive about the WC.
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 8th, 2014 12:32 pm (UTC)
scuze me jogi there seems to be some mistake i do not see rene adler on that list
or max kruse

Although not even gonna lie about how happy I am to see Howedes and Draxler. TBH I wasn't expecting Gomez to make it given his injury and struggle to get past it. Wondr why he didn't tap Sidney Sam...
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 8th, 2014 12:40 pm (UTC)
eta: Ahahahah no seriously I just realized there's no Westermann

Westermann is the 'when all else fails' player so Jogi must be feeling really confident to nominate some cute young things over him

also no holtby who admittedly hasn't had the best season but still exists and is a midfielder

it's like

messing with my head
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 12:46 pm (UTC)
Same here! Personally I don't see Ron-Robert anywhere near the world cup. There are many good young goalies, like Leno and so on.
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 8th, 2014 12:52 pm (UTC)
Even then we're talking goalies, who have the longest shelf life of any player outside of like, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

You don't need to rush to train new 20-something keepers. Then you take out the experience which I'm even more uncomfortable with. Heck, Lehmann came out of retirement for Arsenal and he was just fine n' dandy.
Jenny Jenkinsjenny_jenkins on May 10th, 2014 05:12 am (UTC)
We'll only take 2 keepers, I think.
marsyke: pic#120993075marsyke on May 10th, 2014 05:40 am (UTC)
Not possible. You have to take 3 goalkeepers according to the FIFA rules.
I'm not a Soldier: Philipp Lahmnotasoldier on May 8th, 2014 03:07 pm (UTC)
I don't get it with Holtby, either. I miss him at Schalke! :(
Laurenblackjedii on May 8th, 2014 06:34 pm (UTC)
I am sure deep inside heisses Schalke too given they will pro have a CL spot and he was loaned to a team facing relegation

But I know he really wanted to play in EPL like his dad so I cant fault him for that

Negl I will be nlown over if Arsenal keeps going after Draxler sounds like they are trying again
Jenny Jenkins: Melancholy 2jenny_jenkins on May 10th, 2014 12:17 am (UTC)
He's had the year from hell. Hardly played at all - not even at Fulham.
chocoholic_81: coolchocoholic_81 on May 8th, 2014 06:14 pm (UTC)
normally I'm a huge Adler-fan. But this season...
Just no! Hamburg is sooo bad this season and René also didn't look well most of the time.

And yeah, I'm also missing Kruse in the squad :(
I'm not a Soldier: German national teamnotasoldier on May 8th, 2014 03:09 pm (UTC)
Yay for Goretzka and Volland! They're promising, although I doubt they will end up going to Brasil.
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 03:18 pm (UTC)
Oh, I think they are promising, and they probably won't come with, but I would rather see them at a smaller tournament first. They have no international experience whatsoever. Well, not much anyway.
marsyke: pic#120993075marsyke on May 8th, 2014 06:11 pm (UTC)
The squad doesn't look too bad on paper. The question is what it will look like on the field.
I think we can also say that Germany has a striker problem.
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 8th, 2014 08:35 pm (UTC)
They say Jogi is a dear friend of the false nine.
Lauren: okitablackjedii on May 9th, 2014 02:17 am (UTC)
that is one bad romance right there
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 9th, 2014 03:02 am (UTC)
Agreed.

Plus … a Pep he is not.
Jenny Jenkinsjenny_jenkins on May 10th, 2014 05:13 am (UTC)
Even Pep can't make it work against big opposition without Messi.

I'm most concerned by this decadent bullshit of putting Lahm in midfield.
connorblond: imitation to care about problemconnorblond on May 10th, 2014 05:16 am (UTC)
haha! I don't think he will be there during the WC. At Bayern it may work, but with the abundance of midfielders Lahm really is needed somewhere else.
lady_teazle: Happy Lahmlady_teazle on May 10th, 2014 04:10 pm (UTC)
A not very sympathetic article on Mario Gomez's dismal year and WC woes

And now, horrifyingly, Schweini and Reus have gone off injured (May 10). They'd better be okay in time.
Larry: Basti green hathey_larry on May 11th, 2014 04:41 am (UTC)
they have to!
lady_teazle: Happy Lahmlady_teazle on May 10th, 2014 04:12 pm (UTC)
What about giving Fahrmann a chance, Jogi? He's had a wonderful year at Schalke.
Larry: Basti green hathey_larry on May 11th, 2014 04:42 am (UTC)
i'm really nervous seeing this list. why is lukas in midfield? -_-
connorblond: Schweinsteigerconnorblond on May 11th, 2014 05:07 am (UTC)
I think Jogi sees him as an offensive midfielder. Which he actually is, even though his goal is always to score :)
