Best football news sources, blogs, twitters - recommend your favourites! (edited)
Hey there, guys!

With the World Cup fast approching (not to mention both European finals), I thought about creating a little list of good football news sources, as well as blogs and twitters worth following.

Right now I'm particularly interested in pre-World Cup NT profiles and 'prediction' articles, as well as good 'think pieces' (I hate that expression but I don't really know what else to call them) and tactical analysis articles - but anything goes as long as it's football-related!

I'll start by posting some of my favourites; please make your suggestions in the comments and I'll add them to this post.

etuL00H

News sources:

- Guardian Football
--- Amy Lawrence of The Observer/Guardian Blog and Barney Ronay (suggested by jenny_jenkins)

Blogs and various websites:

- Zonal Marking (football tactics)
- The Secret Footballer (football commentary by a footballer whose indentity is, well, secret; I highly recommend his first book btw)
- The Gentleman Ultra (Italian football; articles about ultra culture, profiles of Serie A teams, both classic and current)
- Dirty Tackle (humorous football blog; suggested by yeats)

Podcasts: (all suggested by jenny_jenkins)

- 5Live Football Daily
- Football Weekly
- 606 Football phone-in
- World Football ("the best, most thoughtful podcast on football; done weekly by the BBC")
- Los Corresponsales (5 minute football discussion on YouTube with Sid Lowe, Filippo Ricci and Martin Ainstein)

Twitters:

- Paolo Bandini (my favourite football reporter bar none; Italian football)
- Football Italia (self-explanatory)
- Gabrielle Marcotti (Italian football; tweets in English & Italian)
- Rubén Uría (Spanish football; quality (mostly) unbiased journalist imo; tweets in Spanish though)
- Sid Lowe (Spanish football; good articles but he can be annoying sometimes)
- Tom Clee (Portuguese and Spanish football)
- Tom Kundert / Portugoal (Portuguese football)
- Ben Shave (Portuguese football)
- Sporting Intelligence (English Football, mostly)
- Iain Macintosh (English football)
- Gary Neville (best football pundit around, imo; oblig regardless of club preference)
lady_teazle's twitter suggestions:
- Jan Aage Fjortoft ("gossip, news, pics - he's a lot of fun. Info on Bundesliga, Premier League, and of course Norway. Tweets 95% in English.")
- Raphael Honigstein ("freelance writer for The Guardian and many other publications. Bavarian born, he's got deep connections in Germany.")
- Footy Vines ("Missed the goal when you went to the bathroom? No problem. Also @FutbolVines and @ManUtdVines for MUFC nuts.")
- Cristian Nyari ("Editor in Chief of the Bundesliga Fanatic.")
- Bundesliga (official twitter in English)
- Der Chef ("Der Chef has a lovely English language site, Schwartz und Weiss, dedicated to the German National Team.")
- Footie Writer ("a hack who prefers to remain anonymous." lol )
- the Secret Footballer crew: @TSF, @TSFjourno, @TSFphysio, and even @tsfbookie and @thesecretwag

Footballers: (all suggested by blackjedii)

- Per Mertesacker (fb)
- Lukas Podolski (fb)
- André Schürrle (fb)
- Lewis Holtby (fb)
- Benedikt Höwedes (instagram)
- Disney Prince Arne Friedrich (twitter)
- Mario Balotelli (twitter)

Active LJ football communities:

- hala_madrid (Real Madrid leaning, quite obviously; suggested by yeats)
- crinkly_ears ("about Mesut Ozil, during the World Cup it turns into a Germany NT place; updates regularly in the off-season"; suggested by jenny_jenkins)

I'm not on Twitter, so I can't really add stuff, but I hear some of the German players have pretty good blogs. :)

Facebook Per and Lukas at least. They pose lots of derpy pictures (my favorite being the one of Per showing Rene Adler around the tube unfunf). Lukas - or his agents I am not sure with - will generally post in three languages whereas Per now regularly posts in English first German second.

Howedes's instagram is... interesting because boy is a hipster and then some.

Balotelli's Twitter is... well, he's Mario Balotelli.

I follow Lahm and Neuer too but I don't really find Neuer's very interesting. Lahm is always in German but he generally only posts after a bad game to reflect on it which is double-interesting because so much of it is tactical talk. Thomas Muller posts a huge wall o' text too.

lmao when you said hipster you really didn't lie, damn!
edited the post with your suggestions, thanks! :)

d'oh I FORGOT

Andre Schurrle also posts in English as part of you-know-who. Also plenty of derpy images.

Lewis Holtby is adorable

Trying to think of other German players that regularly post in English. There is Ozil but I don't actually see him post as much anymore (he'll do three languages as well)

Now that he's retired Arne Friedrich will regularly comment on just about anything

FTR Facebook has built-in translate that works about as well as you'd expect. So I half understand what these folks go on about...

on the lighter side of things, dirty tackle always brings the laughs.

and if you're looking for a football community on livejournal that's still active, hala_madrid has regular posts and matchspams that still get a lot of activity! /pimp
untxi: nastassjauntxi on May 5th, 2014 06:37 pm (UTC)
thank you, adding those 2 now!

and thanks for the hala_madrid suggestion, not exactly a madrid fan but patriotism and club ties made me root for them so i'll be sure to pop up for the upcoming matches!

Nearly forgot: I have an active community about Mesut Ozil running - during the World Cup it turns into a Germany NT place. And it even updates regularly in the off-season.
