If you watched the Spain-Germany World Cup semi-final today, you would have seen a fan run onto the pitch within the first few minutes and get immediately apprehended by the stadium guards. When I watched and saw this happen I said to myself “this guy looks like the Cassano pitch invader. Same t-shirt style. But it can’t be him, it’s Spain-Germany”. If you guys remember, back in November a 23 year old guy from Pescara invaded the pitch during an Italy-Holland friendly with a superman t-shirt that said “Cassano in Nazionale“. Back on the last day of the season, the same guy struck again, this time during Sampdoria’s last home game vs. Napoli in Genoa. He pretended to be a steward and invaded the pitch with the same t-shirt, shaking Cassano’s hand. For that, he was given an 8 year ban from any Italian stadium and sentenced to 10 months in prison for his past history of pitch invasion. Well guess what? The pitch invader in South Africa today was him!
His name is Mario Ferri, and today he invaded the pitch of the World Cup semi-final. This time his superman shirt said “Cassano in Nazionale: Lippi I told you so” and he was holding a vuvuzela. Some reports are saying a sponsor paid for his ticket to South Africa and the game. Mario Ferri is in trouble now though, since invading a World Cup game isn’t exactly a light matter. Sure, he didn’t have any intention of hurting anyone, but it’s not something FIFA wants to see. He was arrested and brought to a South African jail cell. His situation will be decided quickly I’m guessing. At least one thing is for certain: a part of Italy made it to the World Cup semi-final. Oh and maybe another thing is certain: with Prandelli as national team manager and the probable call-up of Cassano, he won’t have to do this anymore. Or he can, but he needs a new saying for his shirt.
Here are his two previous pitch invasions:
