32 Nations and 32 Epic Works of Art

Wieden + Kennedy New York tapped Capetown artists Am I Collective to create 32 murals, each one paying homage to an international soccer star, as part of its integrated effort promoting ESPN's comprehensive coverage of the 2010 World Cup.

The murals take inspiration from African street signage and movie posters, and also contain symbolic Easter Eggs for fans to discover.

The art will be featured in more components of the fully integrated campaign and on the ESPN World Cup site.

It’s a little too much for one post, but I’ll do it anyway. Here are 32 amazing drawings of the 32 nations taking part in the World Cup.

What do you guys think? Which ones are your favorite? The Germany one made me go o_O to be quite honest.

I think they went for who they remembered to be decisive in our last big triumphs in 96 and 90 (Bierhoff, Klinsmann, Vogts, Müller) plus the Ehrenspielführer (Walter, Seeler, Beckenbauer, Matthäus).

OH MY GAAHHH, I always see these pics in ads on kickette and other sites, and I always wanted to see these in real form!!!

I like USA's, lol Australia, Denmark's made me laugh, lol at Capello in the England one, I WANT TO SEE IVORY COAST'S PIC SITUATION IN REAL LIFE, Japan's made me go "oh snap", hehe Portugal, South Africa's is cute, and Switzerland's is clever.

awesome artwork, though their choice in Germany-Legends that are supposed to give Ballack wings yet hold him down at the same time (my interpretation of this) seem a bit puzzling at first.


On second glance though, it's the four lifetime brevet-captains and the four top scorers in the history of the Mannschaft, so that makes perfect sense.

Bierhoff, of course, isn't a top-scorer, but Klose ranks third in that list and it seems like they didn't want to put a contemporary player into the mix, so they went for the man who scored the only Golden Goal that ever decided the winner of an international competition in the history of football.


I find that fitting, though a bunch of German football fans will heartily disagree with me and defend their stance to the death. Despite winning us the Euros, he wasn't much liked in his days, poor Olli. Still isn't, actually.

the man is apparently one of the best and most reverred matadors in contemporary Spain. He was on the brink but survived, though his jaw head to be rearranged in an 8 hour emergency operation.

His father and agent are already sad that he probably won't be mentally stable enough to enter a bullring again.

I love Hemingway and I respect Spanish tradition, but that even fazes me.
